MLB upholds Pirates official scorer in Sabathia dispute

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmail

CC Sabathia will not get a no-no.

Major League Baseball today upheld the official scorer’s call on Sunday in which Pirates third baseman Andy LaRoche was credited with a hit rather than an error in Sabathia’s eventual one-hitter at PNC Park.

The Brewers appealed to the MLB Scoring Review Committee, which held an ‘extensive and constructive discussion’ after reviewing footage of the play and the Brewers’ documentation.

The committee ruled official scorer Bob Webb’s judgement call was not ‘clearly erroneous,’ which is the standard for League reversal of a call.

The Brewers contended LaRoche’s fifth-inning slow roller down the third-base line was an error. Webb immediately ruled it a hit after Sabathia tried to bare-hand the ball and dropped it.

“Bob Webb is a 20-year veteran scorer who is held in high regard,” said MLB’s Phyllis Merhige. “This play is a reminder of the difficult decisions that official scorers face.”
