Monroe, Perez sign minor-league deals

Looking to add outfield depth, the Pirates today signed free agent Craig Monroe to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Last season, Monroe batted .203 with eight homers and 29 RBI in 58 games with the Minnesota Twins. He has a career .253 average in 780 total games for the Twins, Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs.

The Pirates will have three non-roster outfielders in camp: Monroe, Andrew McCutchen and Jeff Salazar. They, along with Steve Pearce, will battle for bench spots. Brandon Moss, Nate McLouth and Nyjer Morgan likely will be the Opening Day staters.

The Pirates today also signed re-signed catcher Miguel Perez, who spent last summer with Double-A Altoona. Perez also will attend big league camp.

The Pirates will have 14 non-roster players in camp, which opens Feb. 13.
