Hinske due back Wednesday

BRADENTON, Fla. — Eric Hinske (ribcage bruise) played in a minor league game today and will do so again Tuesday. Hinske is penciled in as the designated hitter Wednesday for the Pirates’ game against the Twins.

• This could be a good omen for Andy LaRoche: he’s gotten a hit in all 12 games in which he’s played this spring. LaRoche has two homers and leads all major leaguers with a .538 batting average (14 for 26).

• Jose Tabata tonight smacked his fourth double, tops on the team. He’s hitting .409 in 10 games.

• Among those who will not make the trip tomorrow to Tampa for the Yankees game: Ryan Doumit, Adam and Andy LaRoche, Freddy Sanchez, Craig Monroe, Brandon Moss, Hinske and Andy Phillips.

• Phillips (stiff back) has not played since March 7

• Reliever Jesse Chavez has allowed at least one earned run in four of his seven outings. His ERA swelled to 12.71 tonight after he served up a mammoth, two-run homer tonight to Jon Weber.
