Shortstop Ronny Cedeno broke the tip of his right pinky finger and will out until at least Tuesday. Cedeno sustained the injury last night while fielding a grounder.
“After that, I could barely swing the bat,” Cedeno said. “I was swinging one-handed.”
Manager John Russell is hopeful the injury will not put Cedeno on the disabled list.
“We were assured by the doctors that it’s something he can play with once the swelling goes down,” Russell said.
Cedeno has hit four homers in 19 games since arriving from Seattle in the Jack Wilson trade.
• Tuesday, reliever Evan Meek, who’s on the 60-day DL due to a strained oblique, will begin working out at the team complex in Bradenton, Fla.
• Twenty-two members of the 1979 World Series team will be introduced on the field before tonight’s game.
“A few of those guys already have stopped by the clubhouse,” Russell said. “It’s important for our players to know the heritage and history of Pirates baseball.”
• Ex-Buccos injury updates (each with a familiar ring): San Francisco second baseman Freddy Sanchez has missed the past four games due to a sore shoulder. Sanchez has sat out eight of 21 games since the Pirates traded him to the Giants. … Atlanta outfielder Nate McLouth is on the disabled list with a strained hamstring. … Seattle shortstop Jack Wilson is day to day with a sore hamstring. It’s the same hammy that nagged Wilson before he was dealt to the Mariners.
