Scheduling snafu

LOS ANGELES — The Pirates will make four separate trips to California next season to play the Dodgers, Giants, Padres and Athletics. It’s an annoying travel snafu that has plagued the Pirates often in recent years. “Every time we did it when I played, we always hit at least two (California) cities on a trip,” manager John Russell said. “It would’ve been nice to do San Diego-L.A. and San Francisco-Oakland.”

– Russell said second baseman Delwyn Young likely is out until Friday, at the earliest. Young’s lower back was stiff and sore again today, making it doubtful he’ll be available even as a pinch-hitter.
