Pirates claim Claggett

September 24th, 2009

Today, the Pirates claimed right-hander Anthony Claggett off waivers from the New York Yankees. To make room on the 40-man roster, Jose Ascanio was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

Claggett, 25, went 7-7 with a 3.07 ERA in 39 games (five starts) for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He also made two appearances for the Yankees. Claggett was the Detroit Tigers’ 11th-round draft pick in 2005. He was traded to New York in 2006 as part of a deal for Gary Sheffield.

Badd news, good news for Claggett. He didn’t stick with a real major league club, but he didn’t get shipped back to Triple-A either. Instead, he caught on with a development club for the majors, namely, the Pirates. With the Pirates, he can continue to hone his skills, get paid (slightly) more, get much better travel and, best of all, maybe make it back to the majors one day. Can be a problem, though, if constant losing is an issue for him…
