Electronic sunshine

February 16th, 2010

Pirates media relations director Jim Trdinich a little while ago sent me a dose of electronic sunshine.

Jimmy T wrote in an e-mail that “more than half” of the 66 players invited to spring training camp already are working out at Pirate City, a day ahead of tomorrow’s reporting date for pitchers and catchers. Attached to his e-mail were two snaps of pitchers preparing for long toss and a batter in the cage … under sunny skies!

Paul Maholm is not yet in Bradenton, Fla., but he’s on his way. About a half hour ago, he Tweeted from his car: ”On the road kind of bored since I only pretty much turn once for 9 hrs. Almost on I-75 though. Enjoy ur day.”

The Pirates’ first official workout for pitchers and catchers — a day filled with running, stretching and a bit of throwing — is noon Thursday.

    Gabriel,

I appreciate your enthusiasm. Never has an oncoming season had so many question marks before. Can the totally new bullpen mesh and be an improvement over last year? Can these young hitters continue to develop and produce enough runs to take some heat off the pitchers? Can Paul Maholm and Zack Duke be the one-two knockout punch in the starting rotation?
