Raynor awaits his fate

MILWAUKEE — The Pirates hope to keep outfielder John Raynor in their farm system. Late Monday night, Raynor was designated for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot for right-hander Jeff Karstens, who was brought up from Triple-A Indy to make a spot start tonight against the Brewers.

The Pirates claimed Raynor in December’s Rule 5 draft from the Marlins. If Raynor clears waivers, Florida could ask for him back and return half of the $50,000 fee the Pirates paid to claim him. Or, the Marlins and Pirates could work out a trade which would enable Raynor to remain with Pittsburgh.

Huntington said he is willing to try to hammer out a deal, if necessary.

Raynor, in the meantime, will have a few days off while his destination is decided. The challenge is to stay in playing shape during his down time.

“I’m going to go home, keep swinging the bat and, hopefully, I’ll be ready to play — wherever that may be,” Raynor said.
