McCutchen out of lineup

The entire team was on the field at 3:20 p.m. today for an extended pregame workout — doing bunt drills and pickoff drills, shagging flies, taking grounders, and so on. It’s the kind of stuff teams do every day during spring training. The Pirates typically hold such workouts every few weeks at PNC Park during the season.

“We worked on everything,” manager John Russell said. “We identified some things we needed to tighten up. It’s not punishment. It’s work.”

Outfielder Andrew McCutchen tested his sore ankle by running in the outfield but he did not participate in the drills. He watched the workout from the third base coach’s box. McCutchen is not in the lineup tonight, though he is available to pinch hit.

“He’s day to day,” Russell said. “He still feels it running and making turns.”

Outfielder Lastings Milledge tested his left shoulder — injured Sunday as he tried to make a diving catch — during the workout and seemed OK. He fielded bouncers and fly balls and made throws to the infield.

— Brendan Donnelly (strained oblique) went onto the 15-day disabled list. Steve Pearce was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. “It’s the right move,” said Donnelly, who’s eligible to return May 13. “If anything, it’s going to protect me from me trying to come back too fast. It was more of a necessary move because we need another bat. I’m OK with that. I understand.”

— Kevin Hart’s shoulder surgery this morning went fine, according to GM Neal Huntington. Hart is expected to be back in action by next spring.

— Chris Jakubauskas has not yet resumed baseball activities after being struck in the head by a line drive April 24 in Houston. “Basically, it’s see how I feel each time get off the (exercise) bike,” he said. “It’s going well so far, but we’re taking it real slow and cautious.”

  1. I’d like to see Pearce get a chance to contribute if Jones struggles.
