Veteran baseball writer Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com today writes that the Pirates have picked up GM Neal Huntington’s option for 2011 and might already have done the same for manager John Russell.
Tuesday, Rosenthal reported via anonymous sources that Pirates upper management had begun discussing the possibility of firing Russell. That report was denied by president Frank Coonelly and Huntington.
I spoke with Huntington a few minutes ago, and he declined to comment on his contract status.
“We don’t talk about contracts publicly,” Huntington said. “Our focus is on doing our job well. What makes stability is results on the field.”
Coonelly has not yet returned a phone call and text message seeking comment.
