Morton optioned to Indy; Marte on mend

It doesn’t appear right-hander Charlie Morton will rejoin the Pirates starting rotation anytime soon. Today, Morton (shoulder fatigue) completed his rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis. He was activated from the DL and optioned back to Indy. Morton will start tomorrow night for Indy.

»»» Steve Pearce (sprained ankle) and Chris Jakubauskas (concussion) had setbacks during their rehab stints with Indy. Pearce has sat out the past two games due to sore knees. Jakubauskas injured his groin Thursday in his first rehab outing, and was shut down today. Both players will be re-evaluated over the weekend.

»»» Outfielder Starling Marte (broken hamate) on Saturday will begin a one-week rehab assignment with the Gulf Coast League Pirates. If all goes well, he’ll be moved up to High-A Bradenton.

»»» The Pirates ripped up 125,000 square feet of Bermuda grass and six inches of topsoil on Field 3 at the Pirate City complex in Bradenton, Fla., and replaced it with a synthetic surface. The field, which will be ready for play on Saturday, is the first of its kind at a minor league complex. Team prez Frank Coonelly said the artificial surface “will allow our players to get quality work done outside on days when grass fields are unplayable.”

»»» Right-hander Hayden Penn was named Indy’s player of the month for June. Penn notched four victories with a 1.89 ERA last month. In 33 1/3 innings, he amassed 32 strikeouts and gave up nine walks.
