HOUSTON — The Pirates today acquired right-hander Sean Gallagher from the Padres for cash considerations. Gallagher had been designated for assignment Thursday.
Gallagher will join the Pirates on Thursday in Houston. The team will have to make a corresponding roster move.
“I’d like to be a starter,” Gallagher said, “but I’m ready fror whatever they want me to do.”
This season, Gallagher made 15 relief outings and had a 5.57 ERA. He pitched 23 1/3 innings and allowed 24 hits and 19 walks and struck out 21.
“I can get that (control) problem solved,” Gallageher said., “It’s just a matter of getting back down to basics again.”
• The Pirates purchased catcher Jordan Newton from the New Jersey Jackals of the independent Canadian-American League. Newton, 24, was assigned to High-A Bradenton, where he’ll provide depth after the season-ending injury to Tony Sanchez.
In 27 games with New Jersey, Newton hit .364 with two homers and 20 RBI. He started 17 games at catcher and also made five starts in left field. Newton was Detroit’s sixth-round draft pick in 2006, and last year played for the Tigers’ High-A club in Lakeland, Fla.
