The Pirates designated reliever Brendan Donnelly for assignment and optioned Brad Lincoln to Triple-A Indy after today’s 6-3 loss against the Padres.
“I didn’t see this coming,” said Donnelly, who was 3-1 with a 5.58 ERA in 38 outings.
Maybe he should have. By cutting Donnelly now, the Pirates will avoid the possibility of having to pay him up to $1.65 million in performance bonuses.
Donnelly will make $1.35 million in base salary this year. If he clears waivers and the Pirates cannot trade him, Donnelly will not be sent to Triple-A.
Lincoln (1-4, 6.57) had another rocky outing this afternoon. He worked 6 1/3 innings and allowed six runs on eight hits.
“I don’t deserve to be here right now,” Lincoln said.
The Pirates will fill both roster spots before Tuesday’s game in Denver against the Rockies.
