Clement goes on DL

The Pirates put Jeff Clement on the disabled list today, hoping the time off will help his irritated left knee. Clement started at first base on Friday, going 0-for-4, and was 5-for-17 (.294) with two home runs in eight games since being recalled from Indianapolis on July 31. Manager John Russell said he didn’t have a sense of serious it may be (Clement had season-ending surgery on his left knee nearly two years ago when he was playing for the Mariners) but said an MRI done last week was OK.

Taking his place is left-handed pitcher Justin Thomas, back up for his third stay with the Pirates. He is expected to be in uniform tonight.

The only other item of note on tonight’s roster is that Ryan Doumit will be back behind the plate for the second game in a row. Russell said that Chris Snyder is healthy, despite this being the first time he’s had back-to-back days off since making his Pirates debut on Aug. 2. Before Sunday, Snyder had made all but four starts at catcher.

Here are tonight’s lineups:
For the Pirates:
McCutchen 8, Tabata 7, Walker 4, Jones 3, Alvarez 5, Doumit 2, Milledge 9, Cedeno 6, Ohlendorf 1

For the Cardinals:
Schumaker 4, Jay 8, Pujols 3, Holliday 7, Lopez 6, Molina 2, Feliz 5, Craig 9, Lohse 1
