A few final notes …

MIAMI — A few final notes from the 2010 season …

»»» Garrett Jones appeared in 158 games, the most by a Pirate since Jason Bay played in 159 games in 2006. The team record is 163, set in 1967 by Bill Mazeroski and in 1989 by Bobby Bonilla.

»»» Jose Tabata and Neil Walker failed in their bid to finish as the first set of Pirates rookies with .300-plus batting averages in 111 years. Tabata (.299) went 0 for 4 and Walker (.296) went 0 for 3 with a walk.

»»» Ronny Cedeno ended the season riding a seven-game hitting streak. During the stretch, he batted .400 (10 for 25) with two doubles, two homers, four RBI and three runs scored.

Cedeno accidentally wore a Spanish-language jersey — it had “Piratas” across the front — at the start of the game. After homering in the second inning, he changed into the usual road gray “Pittsburgh” jersey the rest of the team was wearing.

First of all, his name is Rob! Rob, aka “Rob.”

It is hard to take your comments seriously when you can’t even get the simple facts correct.

Rebuilding one of the worst minor league systems takes time and has come nearly full-circle. There is a good nucleus of young players up in the majors now with others making waves down in the minors. If we can cure the starting pitching woes this team has a chance in a weak central. As the veterans of the starting pitching staff Duke and Maholm have to be leaders and pitch to their potential; enough of this 2 2/3 innings and 4 runs. Quality starts boys. That is what it’s all about.

I am happy to see Russel getting the boot. I don’t think he made the right decisions very often. A lot of games, when the Pirates were down a run late in the game, he failed to call for a sac bunt that could have moved a runner into scoring position. He also tended to leave his starters in too long.

  3. Clay Smith says:

Soon, if we haven’t already, we will become the Oakland Raiders of Baseball. What quality MGR is going to want to take the job with the Pirates? On a positive note we didn’t have a “Fire sale” of talent. It looks like we have a decent young core. Sadly, we have been here before, just a team developing for other teams. I hope not, but has happened to much in the past. We are the triple A plus farm team for the rest of the majors.

The Pirates averaged nearly 20,000 fans for a team that lost over 100 games. Nutting is happy as a pig in slop. Bring in Garner who wants to be here and will shake things up. He’s a WINNER
