Pregame: Doumit, Beimel, tsunami

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Ryan Doumit first felt a twinge in his right oblique two days ago during batting practice. He’s been shut down since then — although the Pirates kept the injury secret until late last night, when I asked why Doumit was scratched from today’s travel roster — and expects to be out another couple of days. He’s doing light exercise, but is not cleared to swing a bat.

“It feels like a little bee sting,” Doumit told me this morning. “It’s not serious, but I know how these oblique injuries can be. If you’re not careful with it, it can turn into a long-term thing.”

In April 2009, Nate McLouth was sidelined for a couple of weeks by a minor oblique injury. Adam LaRoche also missed a big chunk of time with a strained oblique a few years ago.

»»» Lefty Joe Beimel (sore forearm) threw about 30 pitches in live batting practice this morning at McKechnie Field. He felt no discomfort and will make his spring training debut Monday against the Orioles. “Ready to go,” Beimel said.

»»» Reliever Tyler Yates, who lives in Koloa, Hawaii, told me his extended family and house are safe from the tsunami that is sweeping the Pacific Ocean this morning. “We’re about three miles inland and on the side of a hill,” Yates said. A crowd of players, clubbies and media were gathered around the wall-mounted flat-screen TV in the clubhouse, watching coverage of the earthquake in Japan and tsunami.

»»» Ross Ohlendorf will pitch the first four innings tomorrow in a split-squad game against the Phillies. He’ll be followed by Jose Veras (one or two innings), Aaron Thompson (two) and Yates (one).

Jeff Locke will pitch the first two innings of the other game against the Blue Jays in Dunedin, Fla. He’ll be followed by Sean Gallagher (two or three), Daniel McCutchen (two), Ramon Aguero (one) and Mike Crotta (two or three).
