BRADENTON, Fla. — Ryan Doumit is scheduled to play Friday against the Phillies. It will be the first Grapefruit League game since March 8 for Doumit, who’s been out with a strained oblique.
In a minor league game today at Pirate City, Doumit went 3 for 4, including a double and a homer. “We just needed him to see pitches and make sure he’s getting his swing off with no hesitation,” manager Clint Hurdle said.
»»» Here’s the list of starters (no positions are available yet) for Friday’s game against the Phils: Corey Wimberly, John Bowker, Steve Pearce, Andy Marte, Doumit, Garrett Atkins, Josh Rodriguez and Pedro Ciriaco. It sure looks like that game will be geared toward giving the guys on the bubble a (final?) chance to show what they can do before the next round of cuts.
»»» Scott Olsen might be running out of time to stay in the mix for the No. 5 starter job. This afternoon, Olsen pitched 1 1/3 innings against the Orioles and gave up three runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out one. It was his second outing of the spring after being out for a month with a strained hamstring.
There’s only two weeks of spring training left, which means Olsen probably can’t get stretched out enough to start by Opening Day. Hurdle was asked if Olsen is still in the hunt for the rotation.
“I don’t know,” Hurdle said. “He very well may be. I can’t say no. I’ll leave the speculation out there for people who want to speculate. We’ll give him the ball again and see where he takes it.”
