MIAMI — Right-hander Kevin Hart, who’s on the 60-day disabled list recovering from shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum, worked out this afternoon with the Pirates at Sun Life Stadium.

“In talking with Neal (Huntington, general manager), they want our staff to see him now,” manager Clint Hurdle said. “Everybody else has looked at him down in Pirate City (in Bradenton, Fla.). It was a close ride (to Miami), so it made sense.”

Pitching coach Ray Searage and bullpen coach Euclides Rojas will evaluate Hart’s progress. Also, minor league pitching coordinator Jim Benedict, who’s been working closely with Hart in Brandenton, is in the house to pass along updates.

»»» Right-hander Casey Sadler, a 25th-round draft pick last year, was added to the roster at Low-A West Virginia. Zac Fuesser was sent down to short-season State College. Fuesser did not allow a run in two outings, including a four-inning spot start, with West Virginia.

I realize this is off topic of today’s blog, but last night’s performance is just another indication that Maholm has no future as more than a fifth starter in the league. Knowing the bullpen has been taxed recently and most likely going to need to pick up additional innings on Friday with spot-starter Karstens on the mound, Malholm can’t get through FOUR innings to help the team out? You are a veteran ball player how about showing a little fight and battling through for your teammates? I guess there are two bright spots about his latest outing – 1) He failed to serve up his obligatory meatball pitch to opposing batters or at least he didn’t give up a dinger and 2) With the opposing team’s shutout Malholm can still hide behind the “no run support” excuse for why he has a 47-62 career win/loss record.
