MIAMI — Andrew McCutchen has been granted a leave of absence from the Pirates to go home and deal with a personal matter. There is no timetable for when McCutchen will return.
“That’s really all we’re going to share right now, out of respect to his privacy,” manager Clint Hurdle said.
Tonight against the Marlins, Jose Tabata will replace McCutchen in center field. Matt Diaz will make his second start of the year in left.
“We played one game without Andrew and won at Wrigley,” Hurdle said. “That’s why you have 25 guys on the roster.”
McCutchen was scratched April 3 against the Cubs due to a sore neck. The Pirates won, 5-4. Tabata and Diaz went a combined 4 for 10 with two runs scored.
