Both Yamaico Navarro and Josh Harrison are in the starting lineup tonight. It’s a good chance to get those two some playing time — and also get a head-to-head look at them to recall if and when the time comes to make a roster move in the future. Navarro will appear in left field for the third time. Harrison is at shortstop. Clint Barmes (hitless in his past three games) and Alex Presley (3 fort 28 over his past eight games) are benched.
»»» BURNETT BOUNCES BACK: Against the Nats last night, A.J. Burnett did not show any ill effects of his previous outing, when he was tagged for 12 runs by the Cardinals. He didn’t show it, but that nightmare was on his mind as he prepped for last night’s game. “It bothered me,” Burnett admitted. “I was (anxious). We had some work to do in the bullpen and we got it done and i was a lot sharper tonight. One pitch leaked over and that’s probably the one that cost me, the homer, but I was able to find that hook that i had in the past and it paid off. I’ve been around long enough you put that game behind you as soon as you can and you go to work. The work paid off.”
»»» GAME OVER: Rod Barajas has three walkoff homers in his career, and all three were hit during May. Last night’s 5-4 upset was the Pirates’ third walkoff win this season and the 19th time in a dozen seasons at PNC Park that a game ended with a home run.
»»» MINOR MATTER: High-A Bradenton 1B Stefan Welch has an 11-game hitting streak. The Marauders (16-16) have won four in a row.
»»» HAMMERING HAMILTON: Rangers OF Josh Hamilton last night became the 16th player in MLB history to mash four home runs in a game. He also set the single-game AL record with 18 total bases. Pirates skipper Clint Hurdle was Hamilton’s hitting coach a couple of years ago, so it will be interesting to get his take later this afternoon on Hamilton’s record-setting night.
