Morning briefing: Game 4 v. Rays

BRADENTON, Fla. — Want some injury updates? Gaby Sanchez was scratched from the lineup today due to what the team says is “discomfort in his right knee.” He is listed as day to day. I have not spoken yet with Sanchez about what caused the injury. He made a sprawling stop of a hard grounder in the first inning Friday, which might be the culprit…. Phil Irwin was scratched from his scheduled outing yesterday due to a sore right elbow.

“I’m still on a full throwing program, but I won’t throw bullpens for a few days,” Irwin told me this morning. … Travis Snider got the stitches out of his finger (as you may recall, he lost a knife fight against a sweet potato) and will be the designated hitter Sunday against the Phillies (who’ll have old friend A.J. Burnett on the mound). When will Snider be ready to play some right field? “One day at a time,” Snider said. “I’m getting there.” … Travis Ishikawa remains day to day with soreness in his right hamstring. … Technically, this is not an injury update, but closer Jason Grilli will throw a two-inning simulated game on Sunday.

  1. RB,

Thanks for getting this up early. Bucs have 2 shortstops and 2 #9 hitters, plus no DH. Who’s the DH?

  2. Rob Biertempfel says:

Sorry ’bout that. Lineup change this morning got me discombobulated. Mercer is DH, Andino at SS. Corrections have been made (hopefully) above.
And what the heck are you doing up so early on a Saturday?

  3. Groaty, did you really see Drew in Florida or were you kidding? I’m concerned about the little fellow. I don’t frequent the other paper, so I don’t know if he’s been on there or not.

  4. NorthPirateFan says:

Absolutely thrilled to see Chris McGuiness making noise early on this spring. Hopefully he’ll keep it up and Clint Hurdle won’t be able to dismiss him as he did with Robinson last year.

  5. The Czar says:

How awesome would it be if somehow McGuiness turns into our version of Chris Davis?!?
I know this is unrealistic expectations, but hope springs eternal right.

  6. The Czar says:

Hey everyone, how do you get one of those profile pictures? Never figured out how to do that. Thanks in advance.

  7. NMR says:

  8. NMR says:

Not good news at all about Gaby Sanchez.

His surgically repaired right knee is the one that was injured in the second half of 2011. Hasn’t been the same since.

  9. Jim S. says:

    Kendrys Morales, anyone?

Just kidding. I hope Gaby just tweaked something.

  10. JohninOshkosh says:

Go to and follow the instructions. Not too difficult if I was able to do it!

  11. NMR says:

    Mr. Beirtempfel,

    Good stuff from Wandy today?

  12. The Czar says:

Thanks for the help. Lets see if it worked?
