Morning briefing: Game 24 v. Phillies

The sun will burn this stuff off. Coffee will help my mental fog.

The sun will burn this stuff off. As for my mental fog, that’ll require a cuppa coffee … or three.

BRADENTON, Fla. — There’s a thick layer of fog over McKechnie Field this morning. It’s appropriate, considering most everyone in the clubhouse today (including this trusty scribe) are in a bit of a mental fog due to the pre-dawn wakeup call following three straight night games. … It’s Charlie Morton‘s day to pitch, but Stolmy Pimentel will get the start against the Phightin’ Phils this afternoon. Morton will work (with a goal/limit of 100 pitches) in a minor league game today at Pirate City.

  1. Steelkings says:

Is Morton throwing against the Minor Leaguers because the Pirates dont want the Phillies to hit against a top of the rotation starter? If so is that bad news for Pimental?

  2. Leo Walter says:

    Too much thinking ?

  3. Rob Biertempfel says:

Bad news for Pimentel how? He’s going to be in the bullpen to start the season and possibly in the rotation in 2015.

  4. Arriba Wilver says:

They also had Cole throwing against minor leaguers. Nothing to see there, other than Cole and Morton just need some work to stretch out.

  5. I just hope that the Pirates won’t regress. Period. They at last proved the experts wrong last year. And I would hope they can contend again this year.

  6. AJ didn’t do that badly for the Phillies. It’s just that the Phillies didn’t win yesterday, and one is inclined to doubt if they’ll do that much this season, no matter how well AJ might do himself.

  7. Steelkings says:

Maybe you didn’t understand my question. Fans pay money to see the Pirates play the Phillys. Why is Morton not throwing against the Major Leaguers? My only guess was that they didnt want the Phils to get AB’s against Morton. If the Buc’s were playing Minnesota or Boston yesterday, Morton would be there. Thats all.

  8. Steelkings says:

Pecota could predict things like Braun losing 50 games due to suspension.

  9. Steelkings says:

Further more, The Phillies are the only National League team on the Pirates spring schedule. They have played the Pirates 4 times so far. I could list the pitchers the Pirates have run out there against the Phillies, but its much easier listing those who havent pitched to them.
