SOUTH HILLS – Here’s a wacky thought — what else would you expect here, right? — should clubs expecting to be in condition hold back their top prospects even longer? Yes, even longer, despite the criticism they already endure for suppressing service time and Super 2 status?
On Sunday I examined how most young players, including Gregory Polanco, face-plant into the rookie wall during their initial exposure to the majors. Highly-touted Polanco contemporaries, Oscar Taveras and Xander Bogaerts, have also struggled this year. Not everyone, unfortunately, is all that is Yasiel Puig. We had a good sense of this from anecdotal experiences, of course, but it was interesting to study several hundred thousand plate appearances and see when the effect of this wall occurs and how it has changed.
