Camp log (Day 5): #TribHKY NHL video preview, and Root Sports Pittsburgh’s massive scrimmage rating.

Good Friday on you, dear readers.

The Penguins are wrapping their final training-camp session at Consol Energy Center. There is a chill in the air. Seriously, it’s freezing in here.

Some quick hits:

♦ There are 23 players left in camp. Rosters must be trimmed to 23 by 5 p.m. Friday. Draw your own conclusions.

= Great stuff here from Josh Yohe on the power of 25 for great NHL players:

♦ Shameless self promotion:

Catch this blog author on the WPXI pregame show before the Penguins-Flyers tilt on NBC on Saturday (3 p.m).

Also, Sunday marks my debut as Root Sports Pittsburgh around-the-NHL reporter for select Penguins games. Looking forward to working with Rob King, Dan Potash, Paul Steigerwald and Bob Errey – not to mention all those fine behind-the-scenes folks.

♦ Speaking of root, the Black & Gold scrimmage drew a 6.67 rating Wednesday night.

That beat all local prime-time programming.

About 200,100 people watched the scrimmage, according to Nielsen Media Research.

“Amazing fans,” said Root Sports Pittsburgh GM Shawn McClintock.

Remember, Penguins ratings were tops last year, locally, for any NHL or NBA team.

♦ And, finally…

Josh and Some Guy preview the Penguins’ season:

Author: Rob Rossi

Rob Rossi is the lead sports columnist for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He has been called many names, but “Rossi” is the one to which he most often responds. He joined the Trib in November 2002 and was promoted to the columnist role in July 2014. Previously, he had covered the NHL’s Penguins (2006-14) and MLB’s Pirates (2006), while also working on beats associated with the NFL’s Steelers (2005-06) and the NCAA’s Pitt (2004-06). He has won national and local awards for his coverage of youth concussions and athletes’ charities. Also, he is a member of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association executive committee and the Pittsburgh chapter chair. Raised in Crafton and Green Tree and a graduate of West Virginia University, he has covered a Super Bowl, All-Star Games in baseball and hockey, the NCAA basketball tournament and over 100 Stanley Cup playoff games, including the Cup Final twice. Oh, and his sports reporting has led him to brief chats with Mick Jagger and Bruce Springsteen; so that’s pretty cool. He is a regular contributor on TV with WPXI, Root Sports Pittsburgh and TSN. Also, he is the authorized biographer of Penguins star Evgeni Malkin.
