February 24th, 2009

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 1 Pitt won’t stay atop the polls for very long this time.

The Panthers lost at Providence, 81-73, on Tuesday night, one day after ascending to the top of the polls.

Pitt (25-3, 12-3) trailed the entire game, and saw its seven-game winning streak snapped. It was Providence’s first victory over a No. 1 team in nearly 33 years. The Friars improved to 17-11 overall and 9-7 in the Big East.

DeJuan Blair had 17 points to lead four Pitt players in double figures, but fouled out in the final minute. Weyinmi Efejuku scored 16 to lead five Providence players in double figures.
