Pitt sophomore guard Ashton Gibbs scored 10 points as the Jamie Dixon-coached USA men’s basketball under-19 team defeated Iran, 106-55, on Thursday in the opening game of the FIBA World Championship in New Zealand.
With the U.S. all-stars trailing 10-8 midway through the opening quarter, Gibbs hit a 3-pointer to start a 22-5 run that put the Americans ahead to stay.
Gibbs, who played 20 minutes off the bench, shot 4 for 6 from the field and converted both of his 3-point attempts. He also added four assists and two steals.
“One thing we did pretty well was shoot the ball and we made some extra passes,” Dixon said. “Hopefully we’ve got something to build on.”
Tyshawn Taylor of Kansas scored a team-high 13 points for USA, which will play France on Friday.
