Pitt senior shooting guard Jermaine Dixon, the team’s only returning starter, re-injured his right foot and underwent bone graft surgery on a fifth metatarsal fracture this morning at UPMC South Side Hospital.

Dixon had initially injured the foot in early July. He is expected to be sidelined a minimum of eight weeks, according to Pitt trainer Tony Salesi. Pitt’s opener is Nov. 13 against Wofford.

“We fully expect Jermaine to make a full recovery,” Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said. “The surgery was a success and we know that Jermaine will work hard during the rehabilitation process.”

Dixon started all 36 games for Pitt (31-5) last year, averaged 8.4 points per game with 32 3-pointers, and ranked second on the team with 51 steals.

Pitt already is shorthanded as redshirt junior forward Gilbert Brown is suspended for the fall semester for academic reasons. Brown could be eligible to return on Dec. 20.
