PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Pitt held Rutgers to 31 rushing yards on 11 carries in the first half and leads 17-10 at halftime at Rutgers Stadium.
Bill Stull has completed 12 of 17 passes for 106 yards and one touchdown. Dion Lewis has rushed for 63 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries.
Rutgers took advantage of a Panther miscue to take a 7-0 lead 3:24 into the game. A bouncing Rutgers punt bounced off Dom DeCicco’s foot and the Scarlet Knights recovered at the Pitt 11. On the next play, freshman Mohamed Sanu, running out of the Wildcat formation, rushed for his first touchdown and a 7-0 Rutgers lead with 12:36 to play in the first quarter.
Pitt took over at the Rutgers 40 after a 54-yard kickoff return from New Jersey native Ray Graham and needed only six plays to tie the score at 7-all on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Bill Stull to tight end Dorin Dickerson with 9:41 to play in the first quarter.
After a Rutgers punt, Pitt drove from its own 17 to the Rutgers 25 on 14 plays, but the Panthers came away empty as kicker Dan Hutchins missed a 42-yarder.
Pitt went ahead 10-7 on Hutchins’ 45-yard field goal with 11:28 to play in the second quarter and 17-7 on Lewis’ 1-yard run with 3:28 left. Rutgers pulled to 17-10 on a 23-yard San San Te field goal as time expired in the first half.
