Pitt stuns No. 5 Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Ashton Gibbs scored 24 points and Jermaine Dixon added a career-high 21 points, as Pitt continued its mastery over Syracuse with an 82-72 upset victory at the No. 5-ranked Orange on Saturday afternoon at Carrier Dome.

Gibbs went 6 for 9 from 3-point range, added eight rebounds and went 4 for 4 from the line to extend his free-throw mark to 37 in a row, breaking the old record of 34 set by Jason Mathews, Sean Miller and Don Hennon.

Freshman center Dante Taylor added 10 points and nine rebounds for Pitt, which has won five of its past six games at the Carrier Dome and is 12-3 against Syracuse (13-1, 0-1 Big East) since March 2001.

Pitt (12-2, 2-0), which plays at Cincinnati on Monday, scored 53 points in the second half after being frustrated by Syracuse’s 2-3 zone for much of the first half.

Pitt trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half and 30-27 at the break, but outscored Syracuse, 16-4, to open the second half and led the rest of the way.

Wes Johnson scored a team-high 19 points for Syracuse.
