Pitt freshman running back Dion Lewis was selected today to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-America team.
The 28-player team was selected by an 11-member panel of nationally prominent college football writers. True freshmen and redshirt freshmen are both eligible for the team.
Lewis also was selected as the National Freshman of the Year by Sporting News and CBSSports.com. He was named the Offensive Freshman of the Year by CollegeFootballNews.com.
He was the first player to be named Big East Offensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season since Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Vick in 1999.
The Albany, N.Y., native rushed for a Pitt freshman-record 1,799 yards and 17 touchdowns on 325 carries (5.5 avg.), surpassing the 36-year-old mark held by the legendary Tony Dorsett (1,686 in 1973).
