Pitt topples Connecticut… again

HARTFORD, Conn. – Ashton Gibbs and Brad Wanamaker each scored 19 points and Pitt ran its winning streak to seven in a row with a 67-57 victory over No. 15 Connecticut on Wednesday night.

In front of a packed XL Center crowd, No. 16 Pitt (14-2, 4-0) turned back a Connecticut second-half rally to beat its Big East rival for the third time in a row.

Gilbert Brown scored 11 points and Gary McGhee added eight points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Panthers, who play host to Louisville on Saturday.

Stanley Robinson scored 19 points to lead Connecticut (11-5, 2-3), which has dropped two in a row in the Big East. Jerome Dyson added 14 and Kemba Walker 10 for the Huskies.

Pitt led 43-33 early in the second half, but Connecticut fought back to take a 47-46 lead, using a 10-0 run capped by Dyson’s driving layup with 9:40 to play. Pitt answered with a 9-2 run to go ahead 57-51 with 3:27 to play as Gibbs scored five points. Pitt made six free throws in the final 27.6 seconds to seal the win.
