No extra security for WVU game

Pitt officials said there are no plans for additional security for the men’s basketball game with No. 6 West Virginia on Friday night at Petersen Events Center.

Pitt lost to West Virginia, 70-51, on Feb. 3 in a game marred by unruly fan behavior at WVU Coliseum.

“Some of the biggest games in all of college basketball are played at Pitt on an annual basis,” the Pitt athletic department said in a released statement. “The University is well versed in hosting high-profile games and sellout crowds. We take great pride in how our fans represent our university and our city. … We always have heightened awareness for big games. …We see no reason to change our approach or policies for an individual game.”

At West Virginina, Pitt associate head coach Tom Herrion was hit on the left side of his face — inches below his eye — with a quarter thrown from the stands. The incident drew a statement from WVU president Jim Clements, who said the university was “appalled” and “embarrassed.”
