Notes from Pitt afternoon practice No. 2

Here are some notes from Sunday afternoon’s practice with mostly freshman and sophomores, and coach Dave Wannstedt’s post-practice meeting with the media.

*** First off, Greg Romeus is “fine,” according to coach Dave Wannstedt, and the star end is expected to take part in Pitt’s practice on Monday. Romeus left Sunday morning’s practice with what appeared to be an ankle injury, taking a golf cart to the trainers’ room midway through the two-hour workout. Wannstedt said his Big East Defensive Player of the Year, was “just stiff this morning,”

“Nothing serious,” Wannstedt said.

*** Freshmen quarterbacks Mark Myers and Anthony Gonzalez split reps at quarterback during the afternoon practice, with Myers once again displaying an arm strength seldom seen from a true freshman. The 6-foot-4 former St. Ignatius star had a couple of 40-yard passes where “a flick of the wrist” might be overkill. He didn’t even need a flick. He makes a 60-yard pass look effortless.

*** Kevin Weatherspoon made a terrific diving catch of a Mark Myers pass during drills, and Salath Williams pulled in a ball thrown behind him. Wannstedt said both of the freshman receivers are gifted athletes who just need to get a bit stronger. He noted that two other freshmen receivers, Drew Carswell and Todd Thomas, also look good.

“Salath Williams has all kinds of talent. Weight room,” Wannstedt said. “Spoon (Kevin Weatherspoon) has got all kinds of talent. Weight room. Look at some of these guys’ arms next to our guys that have been around here. (Drew) Carswell (6-4, 210) is a guy that physically looks like it. He and Todd Thomas are physically different. It’s an exciting group. It really is, and this is just the freshman I’m talking about.”

*** A handful of walk-ons who weren’t part of the original training camp roster are announced. They include former Bethel Park star Adam Lazenga, a freshman fullback and the Trib’s 2010 Male Athlete of the Year.  Other walk-ons are Jake Delmonico, WR, Blackhawk/Geneva College; Drake Greer, P, Bishop Cavevin; Joe Lopez, DB, Don Bosco (N.J.) Prep; Phil Peckich, DB, Montour; Steve Valenza, DB, Pine-Richland; and Brett Zuck, WR, Keystone. All but Delminico, who must sit out this year after transferring from Geneva, are freshmen.

*** With so many different receivers and defensive backs running in and out, it’s tough to gauge a set third-unit and fourth unit. But here are the groups that worked together most of the time. Also, because of injuries, the same five offensive linemen worked both groups in the afternoon.
