Pitt crushes Northwood in hoops


Ashton Gibbs scored a game-high 25 points as Pitt routed Northwood (Fla.) University, 104-62, this afternoon in an exhibition game at Petersen Events Center.

Pitt, ranked No. 5 in the Associated Press pre-season poll, led 23-0 after eight minutes. Northwood, an NAIA Division II school in West Palm Beach coached by Rollie Massimino, trailed by at least 15 the rest of the way.

Brad Wanamaker had a double-double with 18 points and 10 assists, while Talib Zanna added 13 points and nine rebounds. J.J. Moore scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half. Travon Woodall had 10 points, nine assists and only one turnover in 24 minutes.

Pitt was playing without Nasir Robinson (knee), Gilbert Brown (hamstring) and Lamar Patterson (ankle).

Jonathan Dunn, a junior guard, scored 24 points to lead Northwood.

Pitt will have its second and final tune-up before the 2010-11 season when the Panthers host Indiana (Pa.) on Thursday.
