McGhee nets Big East honors for first time

Senior center Gary McGhee was named to the Big East Honor Roll on Monday after averaging 10.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in victories over Georgetown and Seton Hall last week.

Other honor roll members were Austin Freeman of Georgetown, Rick Jackson of Syracuse, Preston Knowles of Louisville and John Flowers of West Virginia. Kemba Walker was the Player of the Week, again, and Cleveland Melvin, who Pitt will see this Saturday, was Rookie of the Week, again. That’s some pretty good company.

I’m fairly certain this is the first time in four years at Pitt that McGhee has received any Big East recognition. That’s good for him. He’s improved probably more than anyone could have imagined from his first two seasons, when he was DeJuan Blair’s work-out bag at practice. Good for Gary.

After watching Gary McGhee handle the middle against Syracuse Monday night, I came to a deeper appreciation of Coach Dixon’s system and coaching skills. The development of players at Pitt is amazing. From year to year you can actually see the difference in their ability, attitude and confidence. I am glad that players stay at Pitt for four years to actually reap the recognition for their efforts. Kudos for Gary McGhee. GO PITT!!
