*** Here is the early game story on Pitt’s 71-59 win over Cincinnati.

*** Quotes from coach Jamie Dixon, Ashton Gibbs, Brad Wanamaker, Gilbert Brown and Gary McGhee, and Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin.

Jamie Dixon

 On offense

“We took great shots and got great shots and put ourselves into position offensively with our movement and execution. It was a great sign of what we’ve been trying to work on all week.”

 On defense

“We really wanted to shut them down in a lot of ways.”

On Dante Taylor

“He was pretty sore today. He didn’t feel good at all. It was pretty cut and dry.”

On ball movement

“I really thought our ball movement was good. We really tried to emphasize that. We just didn’t think our offense was as good the last couple of games. We got back to what we do. That was great to see.”

On Gibbs’ offense

“This isn’t the first game he’s scored some points. He’s pretty good.”

 On Gibbs’ defense

“I thought he played really good defense today. I give him a lot of credit.”

Gilbert Brown

On team’s offensive turnaround from past two games

“We really came together over this week of practice and looked at the adjustments that needed to be made. In the first half, we took what we established in practice and really put it to work. You could see how many open shots and uncontested layups that we had from us just moving the ball and screening and playing together.”

Brad Wanamaker

On shutting down Dion Dixon and Cashmere Wright

“We just tried to make it tough for them.”

 Gary McGhee

 On allowing 23 offensive rebounds

“We didn’t give as good of an effort as we usually do on the glass tonight.”

 Ashton Gibbs

On his 24.5 point average the past two games

“I’m trying to move without the ball as much as I can. We really executed tonight.”

Mick Cronin

On Pitt

“Pitt has a great team and they played excellent basketball. They put us way too far behind. We missed a lot of layups. To lose by 12 to a great team on the road, it’s going to be tough to watch the film and the missed layups.”

On Gibbs

“Gibbs is one of the best players in the country. He can break your back. He’s a great player.”

On Gibbs’ approach

“He’s got the mental game. He knows what he’s good at. He’s got the most valuable thing a good player can have. He knows what he’s good at. He’s turned himself into a great, great player. I saw him in high school and he didn’t shoot the ball that way. There is no question why he is who he is. Hours of practice.”
