Pitt 71, West Virginia 66, post-game quotes

*** Without Ashton Gibbs, No. 4 Pitt still found a way to beat No. 25 West Virginia, 71-66, at the WVU Coliseum on Monday night. Here is the early game story.

Here are some post-game quotes from Pitt coach Jamie Dixon, Brad Wanamaker, Gary McGhee and Travon Woodall and West Virginia coach Bob Huggins.

Jamie Dixon

On playing without Gibbs

“We really got the message across to our guys in the last 24 hours. We didn’t have to have anybody step up. We just had to play the way we play and do the things we do and execute. No one had to become a different player overnight. We really got that message across.”

On win

“I liked how we did it. We focused on the rebounding and defense. That was a great sign.”

Brad Wanamaker

On Gibbs’ absense

“Without him we just wanted to go out and play our game. We didn’t want to try to fill his shoes. We wanted the guys who step in to play their game.”

On win at WVU

“Anytime we can beat West Virginia it’s always big. The Steelers coming off a loss to the Packers in the Super Bowl, it’s also a big win for the city.”

 On team effort

“This is a prime example of those guys stepping in and showing coach what they could do.”

 On Woodall’s play

“Tra keeps his head at all times.”

Travon Woodall

 On performance

“I tried to play solid and take what the defense gives me. I can play better, but we came out with the win.”

 Gary McGhee

 On team’s 48-point second half

“In the second half we started executing our game. Tra played a really good game. He made plays with the basketball. Brad did the same thing.”

 On win at WVU

“Any time you can come down to West Virginia, it’s definitely a big win. To win without our leading scorer, it definitely feels good.”

 On playing without Gibbs

“I know some people counted us out. They didn’t think we could get it done.”

On defense against Kilicli (19 points on 9 of 13 shooting)

“I felt I played pretty good defense. He made some tough shots. I give him credit.”

 Bob Huggins

 On Pitt’s play

“They outmanned us. They beat us to death on the offensive glass and drove it where they wanted to drive it.”

 On difference without Gibbs

“They drive it more. They just attack the rim.”

 On problems Monday night

“We’re just outmanned. I can’t trade them (my players). I could waive them I guess, but I couldn’t get anybody for them. I could sit here and lie to you, but we just got out-manned.”
