Pitt tops USF, 67-55, Post-game quotes

It wasn’t pretty, but the No. 4 Panthers did enough to beat USF, which has lost 15 of its past 18 games.

Here are some post-game quotes

Jamie Dixon

On rebounding

“We really emphasized it this week. I was really happy how we got after it. I liked how we did it. …It speaks to effort. It speaks to energy and execution. You don’t rebound unless you do a lot of things well.””

 On USF’s effort

“We kept missing put-backs and they made some shots. They are good. They probably felt they didn’t play well in their last game and they responded.”

 On Woodall’s night

“I thought Travon played really well. It shows you can play well without making a lot of jump shots.”

Brad Wanamaker

On defending layups

“We don’t give up layups to each other in practice, so why give it to the other team. An easy layup can get somebody going. We try to make the other team earn everything.”

 On USF second-half run

“They shocked us early on by hitting so many tough shots. That’s something we can’t let affect us. It seemed like tonight we let it affect us and got out of our game. We started playing a little nonchalant you could say, instead of playing our game.”

 On outcome of game

“We definitely know we didn’t play our best. But in the second half we gutted it out.”

Gary McGhee

On rebounding

“That’s something coach really stressed at halftime. We had to come out and be more aggressive. We pretty much pounded it in the second half.”

 Stan Heath

On rebounding (Pitt had 40-18 edge)

“We had a hard time rebounding all night long. That was a major, major difference in the game.”

“Pitt has some strong kids. We have to match that physicality.”

On Noriega missed layup leading to 9-0 Pitt run

“That was a big swing. It didn’t seem like we recovered. We never got things back.”

On Woodall’s defense on Noriega’s missed layup

“He fouled him. We know he fouled him. They don’t call nothing here. It’s Pittsburgh.”

 On team’s effort

“Our guys battled pretty good today, but that wasn’t enough.”

On Pitt’s physicality

“They are a notch above. That makes a difference. We talked about that in the locker room. We need to do that a little bit better. Screen people, hit people and knock people out and get away with it.”

“Look at McGhee. I bet the Steelers would want him out there. They just keep bringing waves of bodies out there. I didn’t even know some of those guys coming out on the court. I had to ask my assistants. You’ve got to give them a lot of credit.”
