Here is the early game story for Pitt’s 71-58 victory over West Virginia in front of a packed Petersen Events Center. Also are quotes from Pitt coach Jamie Dixon and players Brad Wanamaker, Gilbert Brown, Nasir Robinson and Lamar Patterson.

Jamie Dixon

On second half surge

“I liked how we played in the second half. We took care of the ball, got good shots. The offense was good.”

 On defense

“For the most part we defended pretty well.”

 On Patterson

“Lamar played really well. I thought he defended well. He let things come to him. He didn’t force any passes. Very good minutes for a freshman.”

 On Gilbert Brown

“It was great to see him come out and make some shots early. I thought he played really well.”

 On one-point halftime deficit

“There wasn’t a panic at halftime. We had foul trouble. We had some things going against us. We got off to a slow start. But we responded. I felt pretty good going into the second half.”

ON Zanna’s injury

“Guys were messing around off the court after a pre-game meal. Getting into the car. It’s one of those things. It happened this afternoon.”

 Brad Wanamaker

On second-half efficiency

”We adjusted at halftime. We were letting them play a little too physical with us and we weren’t responding. In the second half we settled down and adjusted to their defense.”

 On Patterson’s breakout game

“We knew it was happening. We always joke with him, say he’s a practice player. But we knew he was going to come around. He works hard every day. We’re just happy for him.”

 Nasir Robinson

 On post defense

“We tried to not let them get touches. Meet them outside with our chests. That’s what me, Gary and the rest of the big men did.”

Lamar Patterson

On big night (11 points, five assists, two blocks)

“It felt real good. At practice I’ve been playing pretty good. It felt good to go out on the court and finally put something together.”

Gilbert Brown

On staying positive at halftime

“I felt we had a valiant effort in the first half. We just weren’t making our shots. In the second half we were going to make our adjustments and continue to crash the boards and knock down those shots. We came out and responded.”

On Patterson

“He puts in a lot of work. He’s been having great practices. To see him put it all together, it’s a great feeling.”

  Bob Huggins

 On Pitt

“They are good. There is a reason why they are 25-3. Who’s coming in here and winning?”
