Some individual Big East awards were announced today, and, as expected, Pitt wasn’t among the winners.
Syracuse sophomore Fab Melo was named Defensive Player of the Year by a vote of the league’s head coaches who were not permitted to vote for their own players.
Notre Dame junior forward Jack Cooley was named Big East Most Improved Player, an award Pitt has won six times in the past 12 years. Syracuse sophomore guard Dion Waiters won the Sixth Man Award and Georgetown senior guard Jason Clark has been named the winner of the league’s Sportsmanship Award.
The Big East will announce the winners of its four remaining individual honors –Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year – on Tuesday evening.
