First impressions of Consol Energy Center as an NCAA Tournament basketball venue were, well, rather icy.
That had to do with the temperature inside, not the facility itself.
Two Kansas State players and Southern Mississippi’s Maurice Bolden noted the temps didn’t quite match the high-60s conditions outside.
“I like it,” said K-State’s Rodney McGruder. “But it’s very cold, very cold, very cold.”
Yes, he repeated his words that frequently.
“I’ve watched the HBO special they have on the Penguins,” noted K-State teammate Jamar Samuels. “I’m not familiar with the building, but I’d love to take a tour. But it is very cold.”
Consol officials inserted the NCAA Tournament hardwood floor over the ice surface, which resulted in the chilly reception.
“I know it’s a hockey arena,” Bolden said. “It was pretty cold. Hopefully we can get our practice on the court and try to get better.”
