I remember the night North Carolina State announced it had hired Dave Huxtable to be its defensive coordinator. It was Dec. 14, less than two weeks after Pitt’s final regular-season game and more than three weeks before the BBVA Compass Bowl. (The announcement interrupted a nice dinner I was having with my wife and some [...]

In what couldn’t have been much of a surprise to anyone, beleaguered John Marinatto stepped down today as Big East commissioner. The shifting conference has tabbed former Miami Dolphin CEO Joe Bailey as the interim commissioner. Since replacing Mike Tranghese — who got out just in time – in 2009, Marinatto, a Big East lifer from Providence, took much of the [...]

Midway through the spring, the overriding theme of Pitt practice appears to be balls bouncing off the turf, either through errant passes or botched snaps. Coach Paul Chryst won’t say it, but I will: The defense is ahead of the offense. To be fair, that’s probably the case on most college teams this spring. Offense [...]

    • Pitt coach Todd Graham announced the 2011 team captains today and there were a couple surprises. First, here are the new captains, who will serve for the entire season. On offense – junior quarterback Tino Sunseri, junior wide receiver Mike Shanahan and senior guard Chris Jacobson. On defense – senior nose guard Myles Caragein, [...]

    49ers cut McKillop

    August 30th, 2011

Linebacker Scott McKillop, a fifth-round draft pick in 2009, was cut on Tuesday as part of the 49ers’  trim down to 80 players. Punter Sam Paulescu was also cut, meaning the job of another Pitt product, incumbent Andy Lee, appears to be safe.

No member of a football team’s coaching staff impacts the players more than the strength coach.

    Pitt-UConn post-game thoughts

    November 12th, 2010

Here is a link to the post-game quotes and box score.   *** OK, tell me we haven’t seen this before. The Panthers do an infuriating amount of little things wrong – and just enough big things wrong – that they are unable to get out of their own way and lose a football [...]

Romeus in pads, expected to play

    November 11th, 2010

Senior defensive end Greg Romeus is in pads on the field during pre-game warm-ups and is expected to play tonight against Connecticut. Romeus, who missed the past seven games following back surgery and was listed as questionable on this week’s injury report, practiced all week. He was on the field about an hour before the [...]

    Romeus back at practice

    November 3rd, 2010

Senior defensive end Greg Romeus has returned to practice for the first time since undergoing back surgery in mid-September. Romeus, the 2009 co-Big East Defensive Player of the Year, practiced Tuesday in light shell pads and Wednesday in shorts and shoulder pads. He played one game this year, against Utah in the opener, where he [...]

    Pitt topples Louisville, 20-3

    October 30th, 2010

Pitt notched its third consecutive victory to remain alone atop the Big East with a 20-3 victory over Louisville this afternoon at Heinz Field. The Panthers (5-3, 3-0 Big East) led only 6-3 at halftime, but held Louisville to 74 total yards in the second half and Ray Graham and Dion Lewis had second-half touchdown [...]
