  1. Mason says:

    Nice outing from Tallion tonight.

  2. FormerSoxFan says:

@Mason: He certainly hasn’t disappointed, has he? 38K/4BB in 42.2 IP so far.

  3. Eric Bowser says:

The timing for the road trip stinks, wife and kids are out of town, so I would have had time to go to a game.

As for tonight’s game, quite surprised to see Cedeno in the 2-hole.

  4. Keith Hadley says:

On one hand, Cedeno has always done a nice job hitting second. On the other hand, YIKES!

  5. Dejan Kovacevic says:

@Eric: Who would you have at No. 2? Not an easy call.

  6. Keith Hadley says:

@ Dejan: No, and Cedeno probably fits better at #2 than #8 … other than all the extra at-bats.

  7. J_C_Steel says:

Cedeno at #2 made more sense in May. In June, he’s posted a sub-.500 OPS. Not good (actually, 126th out of 133 position players… ouch).

  8. Eric Bowser says:

@Dejan – I understand Walker is all they’ve got right now but would much rather see Tabata, Walker, and McCutchen at the top of the lineup. Unfortunately, 4-8 is quite possibly worse in all of baseball with Jones, Overbay, Wood, Cedeno, and McKenry.

I know its silly talk but at some point the Mets and Dodgers will have to trade off salary and maybe just maybe Huntington can swoop in and steal a legit major league hitter like Carlos Beltran (RF) from New York. We need someone else to be known as the last trade deadline acquisition as Shawon Dunston has had him tenure long enough.

  9. J_C_Steel says:

Here’s how I’d position the line-up tonight (for righty/lefty, speed and in honor of Brandon Wood’s above .800 OPS thus far in June):

    LF Tabata
    RF Jones (L)
    CF McCutchen
    2B Walker (S)
    3B Wood
    1B Overbay (L)
    C McKenry
    SS Cedeno
    P Karstens

  10. LikeaBugonaRug says:

Walker 2, Jones 4, slide rest up, Cedeno 7 and Wood 8. Give Jones and Overbay the slots they should have, and hope they produce. Hey, this lineup can’t do much worse scoring than they’ve done over the past week.

  11. BenderHeel says:

Wow is that a Mutt & Jeff (plus Cutch) lineup.

Cedeno really is the best fit at #2, but that’s a damning concession.

  12. Bucco Fan For Life says:

Evening All! How about a sweep of Houston? Go Bucs!

  13. Keith Hadley says:

Perhaps we’re spoiled because for so many years we had Freddy Sanchez and Jason Kendall, prototypical #2 hitters. Oh, wait – the Bucs seldom used them in those slots, did they, because they needed them to lead off or hit third. Oh, well.

  14. Bucco Fan For Life says:

Evening DK! Thank you for allowing the horsemen to harrass you on Sunday!

  15. Dejan Kovacevic says:

    @Harrassing horsemen: No, thank you.

  16. JMB says:

    Evening BFFL!

    Nice job Jonesie!

  17. Bucco Fan For Life says:

    Pirates take the lead!

  18. Bucco Fan For Life says:

    Howdie JMB!

  19. TS says:

    @JC Steel:

Brandon Wood should never ever ever bat above 7th in the order. He’s brutal. Never.

  20. TS says:

DK, do you think Tabata should be sent down? He’s not doing the job at all offensively. Thoughts?

  21. Bizrow says:

    BFFL, how was the trip?

PBC Nation – a new beginning
    California – Bakersfield, San Francisco
    Colorado – Ft Collins
    Florida – Palm Harbor, Orlando
    Idaho – Mountain Home
    Indiana – Indianapolis
    Japan – Tokyo
    Maryland – Arnold
    Mississippi – Biloxi
New York – New York (?)
    North Carolina – Asheville
    Ohio – Cincinnati, Columbiana
Pennsylvania – Downtown, Hopewell, Indiana, North Wales, Franklin Park, Forest Hills, Lansdale
Texas – somewhere deep in the heart
    Virginia – JAL, Hampton, Rescue
Washington – Seattle, Nine Mile Falls

    27 and growing

Sorry for the corny beginning and end

  22. Bizrow says:

Oh oh, my comment is under review

    Dam, I hate instant replay ; }

  23. Bucco Fan For Life says:

    Hi Biz!

Trip was fantastic other than the Pirates play on the field. They went 1-3 while I was there but it sure was a blast. Sorry we weren’t able to connect… but we will be back.

    Have additions for your list:

    LaSalle, IL
    Peru, IL
    Coeur d’Alene, ID

  24. Keith Hadley says:

@Dejan: (Off topic) Did you ever read the Strange Sports issue where DC heroes were recruited by Sportsmaster to play a baseball game? I always toyed with different lineups for heroes. Maybe Green Lantern could bat second?

  25. pattonbb says:

    Duncan, SC Biz!!!

  26. Dejan Kovacevic says:

Keith: Yes, that was in the 1970s, I believe.

  27. Dejan Kovacevic says:

@TS: Seriously? Tabata’s been pretty good lately.

  28. Keith Hadley says:

@Dejan: Two examples of personal passions coming together: that issue of Strange Sports and NPR’s contest about 15 years ago to name nine classical composers to fill out a baseball team. (Muzio Clementi was in RF.)

  29. MrB says:

In other games, Justin Verlander of Detroit has a no-hitter going against Cleveland through 7…

  30. MrB says:

Ok Mr. moderator…delete my previous post, no-hitter cleanly broken in the 8th.

  31. Bizrow says:

    Thanks, that makes 31

    We’re wasting chances in Houston

  32. pattonbb says:

    Verlander is filthy.

  33. Eric Bowser says:

so much for Ronny Cedeno actually being anything more than a .240 hitter… about time Chase D’Arnaud gets a shot in MLB while he’s hot.

  34. Dave G says:

    Karstens- 63 pitches thru 5 innings… 48 for strikes, 15 balls (

  35. Eric Bowser says:

I hope any and all conversations from Pirates and their fans is done as it relates to Jeff Karstens being a rotation fill-in because this guy is dealing some serious action on the mound tonight.

Now for the hitters to catch up to the pitchers… never thought I’d type those words this soon.

    base-hit for Cutch!

  36. Bizrow says:

Got em, lets all hand in here, looks like cutch is wounded in action

  37. Bucco Fan For Life says:

We certainly don’t need anything wrong with Cutch!

  38. sidelinespensfan says:

Eric, I couldn’t agree more. This team is in no position to keep running out under-performing (offensively, at least) veterans when we have semi legitimate prospects waiting in the wings on hot streaks. It is time to call up D’Arnaud and give him a few starts at short, and Presley needs to be in right field.

  39. J_C_Steel says:

I don’t think Garrett Jones got more than one strike in that at-bat. He could have walked on 5 pitches there.

  40. J_C_Steel says:

@TS Brandon Wood has been literally twice the hitter than Ronny Cedeno has been in June. Wood has an .800+ OPS this month compared to Cedeno’s sub.-500 OPS. So right now, I’d rather have Wood batting #2. Go with the hot hand.

  41. pattonbb says:

now would be a good time for McKenry to get his first hit.

  42. pattonbb says:

6 guys left on base so far….. sheesh

  43. Playoffs by 2012 says:

Any reason to believe Presley isn’t better than the guys batting in spots 5 – 8 tonight??

  44. Dave Gaston says:

Wow. Norris is still in the game, having thrown just over 100 pitches… 49 of them balls?

  45. Dave Gaston says:

Scratch that last post… 42 of them balls….

  46. pattonbb says:

At least Hurdle left Karstens in

  47. Bizrow says:

Kartsy is out in the 7th

  48. Dave Gaston says:

Karstens’ ERA is down to 2.66.

Why was he pulled? He was rockin’!

  49. MrB says:

Jones has hit the ball well (again) tonight…let him play, let him play.

  50. BenderHeel says:

Biz, you can add philly to the list.

  51. empchaz says:

    chesterfield, new jersey

karstens has amazed this year. unbelievable!

waiting for the handyman to shut it down!

  52. Dejan Kovacevic says:

This won’t be one of those “easy saves” for Hanrahan with Barmes, Pence, Lee, Keppinger due up.

  53. Bucco Fan For Life says:

The Pirates beat the Astros 1-0 on another gem by Karstens AND THERE WAS… NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DOUBT ABOUT IT!

  54. MrB says:

Ok, so Cedeno had to make a play…other than that looked pretty easy to me.

  55. Drew71 says:

PERFECT Dejan. you can jinx the Stros any time. Perfect.

  56. pattonbb says:

@DK – Are you sure about that?

  57. Dave Gaston says:

    Great game!

  58. empchaz says:

6 pitches, ends the pence hitting streak, top last years road wins total

    corona being cracker right now!

  59. Cajun Thunder says:

Slidell, LA checking in after a win.

  60. Dejan Kovacevic says:

    @Cajun: Long time, man.
