  1. SirLochsby says:

I looked at the lineup above and thought, “What a difference a year makes!” Just for comparison, here’s the lineup from June 28, 2010, a Monday game against the Cubbies:

    Jose Tabata LF
    Bobby Crosby 2B
    Andrew McCutchen CF
    Garrett Jones 1B
    Lastings Milledge RF
    Pedro Alvarez 3B
    Ryan Doumit C
    Ronny Cedeno SS
    Paul Maholm P

And for the previous game (with a DH, at Oakland), the lineup was:
    Jose Tabata LF
    Bobby Crosby 2B
    Andrew McCutchen CF
    Garrett Jones 1B
    Ryan Doumit DH
    Lastings Milledge RF
    Andy LaRoche 3B
    Jason Jaramillo C
    Ronny Cedeno SS

    … wow.

  2. Bizrow says:

    Yes, quite an improvement SirLochs

  3. JAL says:

    Sir L

Tabata, Doumit and Alvarez would probably be playing if not injured. 2nd base and RF are two big differences.

  4. Bizrow says:

    That is true,

Four of nine starters are from the Littlefield era

Not to start a fight or argument, but I don’t think the system was as horrible as has been spoken

No Raja Davis though either, starting that is

  5. PokeyReese says:

    @DK

Any information on the recent international signing for the Bucs?

  6. Bizrow says:

    And Mr Hurdle vs JR

  7. JAL says:

    Pokey

    From Pirates Prospects

Pirates Sign International Free Agent Dennis Hurtarte

    http://www.piratesprospects.com/2011/06/pirates-sign-international-free-agent-dennis-hurtarte.html

  8. Bizrow says:

    And Mr Hurdle vs JR

Thanks JAL, 18 years old and has been in organized ball for 5 years

  9. Dejan Kovacevic says:

@Pokey: Not much to add beyond the link JAL just provided, other than that I can tell you Rene has been something of a pioneer in Guatemala, which is to his and the Pirates’ credit. They look in some of the oddest places in these countries, too.

If I get more on that aspect of it, I’ll share here.

  10. Keith says:

Anyone notice how potentially fast the Bucs’ lineup could be right now or, in a couple weeks, when Tabata returns? I mean, Presley, d’Arnaud, McCutchen, Paul, Cedeno, Jones, Tabata … if no power comes our way soon (other than Doumit and Alvarez), Hurdle’s got to go with speed to win.

  11. PokeyReese says:

Thanks for all the info guys

  12. Cobra39 says:

This place is not easy to find….if you have an active blog to follow a Pirates game, why no obvious link to it when someone goes to pirateslive.com? Just a suggestion.

  13. Bizrow says:

I still think Kevin Hart is pretty much done though

  14. Bizrow says:

    Ok top of the first

Presley (notice spelling correction) vs Jo Jo

Grounder to first, one down, Presley did hustle down the line though

D’Arnaut (another name to learn, but I did learn how to spell Roethslisberger, I think)

Chase is in the hole 0-2, takes called strike 3

PRNW, batting right handed, which I read he’s struggling with

Walker works a full count and swings and misses

No runs, no hits, to the bottom of the first

  15. Bizrow says:

Escobar up, a shortstop picked up from atlanta last season

Deep fly to right center, Cutch puts it away, one down

Thames up, on a 2-2 pitch he lofts one to left center, Cutch – two down

Jose-Jose-ose-Jose the unmentioned one up third

Three one pitch, pops to Cutch

After 1, zeros across the board

  16. pattonbb says:

    Diaz got a hit? Wow…..

  17. Bizrow says:

Cutch up – fly to left one down

Overbay – did not get booed, hmmm

3 pitches, 3 strikes, 3 ks for Jo Jo

    Diaz

Goes the opposite way and a single to right

    Legend up

Announcers are talking about the turf, seriously, it looks like something on someones patio

Legend grounds to first on a 2-1 pitch

On to the bottom of the second, no score

  18. Bizrow says:

    Adam LInd up

A pitch up, lined to the right field corner, held to a single

    Juan Rivera, the LF

Swung at an 0-1 pitch I think he may have wanted a do over on

Takes strike three looking, one down

    Aaron Hill up

Some black and gold in the stands

A bouncer back to the mound 1-6-3, end of the inning

    After 2 no score

  19. pattonbb says:

    Presley!!!!!!

  20. pittmd says:

Alex has left the building !

  21. Bizrow says:

    Cedeno

Cedeno singles to right, down the line, we’ll take it

    McKenry up

2-0 and the catcher goes out,

Swings at a high strike on 2-2, one down

    Presley 0 for 1 up

    Full count

Crap, Presley goes deep, 2-0 good guys

  22. Bizrow says:

    Chase up

    Jo-JO is yo-yoing

    Chase walks on 5 pitches

    PRNW –

Reyes is kinda worred this inning about guys on first, and Chase steals 2nd, ball got past the SS/2b, but not far enough

Reyes is kinda in discombubilation this inning

Neal pops up to second, two down

Andrew up, catcher tries a pickoff at 2nd, but its into center, Chase to third

Regardless, Cutch pops up on a nice play to the 2nd baseman, three down

Bottom of the 3rd, 2-0, PBC

  23. Bizrow says:

I’m hoping we can light Mr Reyes up next at bat

  24. DannyMoe says:

Tampa, FL via Wexford checking in.

    Pressley goes deep!!!

  25. Bizrow says:

Patterson, Corey, pops to Ronnie, one down

    E Carnacion up

    Oh-oh, Edwin goes deep, 2-1

  26. Bizrow says:

    JP Arancibia, the catcher up

Full count, 3 fouls back, 4, , 5, lots of fans looking like blue seats, , struck out on something inside, two down

Escobar, 0-1, fly to left, 21 pitches, 2-1, PBC

ROOT reports Yanks beating Brewers 7-0

  27. Bizrow says:

Thanks, and welcome DannyMoe, both places added

  28. Bizrow says:

    Overbay singles to right center

Diaz loops one to right center, bounces over the RF/CFs head, Overbay scores, Diaz with a trip-trip-3 bases

  29. Bizrow says:

    Legend up

There is a duck on the pond, 2-2

  30. Bizrow says:

Good AB Legend, battles, a high hopper to 1st, Diaz scores, Legend beats it out as JJReyes is watching butterflies

Garrett steals second with Ronny up, he tried to bunt though

  31. Bizrow says:

Ronny poke it into right, Legend to 3rd, no outs

    McKenry up

  32. pittmd says:

    Please just a sac fly

  33. pittmd says:

I rather let Correia hit and DH for McKendry

  34. Bizrow says:

    McKenry K’s

Presley up Bucs on the corners one out

    JJ worrying about first

Big opportunity here to cash at least one more in

Presley singles to center, 5-1, Go Go Golem would say from my lips to Gods something

    I will say cool beans

  35. pittmd says:

Alex with 3 rbi’s for the show

  36. Bizrow says:

Chase up, still ducks to cash in

He flies to center, a hard hit ball

PRNW up, he is due, and he singles up the middle, 6-1

JoJo gets the hot water, a reliever coming in now.

He was ready to get a fork stuck in him and the PBC did as requested

  37. Bizrow says:

Well, I got tossed out of the site, ok, stuff happens

Joey Bats goes real deep, after 4 6-3, PBC, the phone is ringing, be back in a while

  38. MrB says:

This game is making me nervous. We’ve got to get to the bullpen.

  39. Bizrow says:

    We are not hoppin here

    6-4, sigh

  40. Bizrow says:

I’m like the blog spammer JJ on the other place, I will not be that person

Good tidings, we can try tomorrow, GO CUTCH 7-4

  41. pipecock says:

I wonder if the Trib is disappointed in the lack of blog participation here, even relative to DK’s previous blog that was behind a paywall. I’m no fan of the Trib, but I want to support DK. But it really isn’t happening with the interactivity over here…

  42. pattonbb says:

I thought they were in Toronto. The ball’s jumping like we’re at Coor’s Field. Jeeze…..

  43. Keith says:

How many games like these have the Bucs played this season? One? Just hope they can close it up.

  44. Drew71 says:

    Yet, Piper, yet.

The Trib is evidently working on and close to some technical and user enhancements.

And the whole super-blog interactive experience is new to the Trib. Yes, they’ve had a blog for awhile. But they have not promoted it as such an interactive tool until Dejan arrived.

I’m willing to give it some time.

Besides, I remember when I started posting in the other blog close to two years ago. (And I think that is the fair comparison…this place now to that other place two years ago.) Back then at the other place, the threads were much thinner and essentially you had about 15 people just talking to each other and sometimes not so much to new people. Back then, as a new person, I felt a bit out of the conversation. I almost gave up before I got too far along there because I couldn’t break into what was then a fairly closed set of discussions.

But not here, where anyone and everyone will talk to anyone and everyone.

So if i compare THIS place NOW to the OTHER place THEN, when it was new, the Trib is doing fine. I’m not sure if it is totally fair to compare this place, so early in its development, to that place after its two year head start.

So here are the real questions to me:
    - Forgetting the other place, is this place now better than this place before Dejan arrived? (YES, unequivocally)
    - Will this place be better in six months than this place now? That is the question to watch, and after seeing how Dejan built the other place, i am happy to give this place some time to ferment. Or fester. Or something.

I already can note one way that this place is now more user friendly and interactive than the other: Dejan is much more active on the threads, engaging in discussion, than writers at the other place.

PS…that is not a complaint about the other place or its writers. The other place is doing fine. Rather, it is a compliment about what is happening on the Trib blog.

  45. JoeBucco says:

    Wow.

Veras. Sometimes I’d rather be lucky than good. ok, always I’d rather be lucky. But that was one nice jam escaped.

    Lets go Buccos.

  46. Keith says:

Also, how many people thought they’d see: “Due up: McKenry, Presley, d’Arnaud” this season?

  47. JoeBucco says:

@pipecock – I think once the blog’s technical aspects as fixed, if done properly, will easily top the old blog. It’s got to be easy to use, got to be intuitive, and has to be engaging. Right now, it’s a list of comments that’s hard to follow. I’m impressed it has this much traffic considering its limitations right now. DK says they are working on them, and I hope to see them soon as that will make a world of a difference.

  48. Naje says:

    McKenry, Presley and d’Arnaud…?

Heck, Larry, Moe and Curly seemed to be more likely…

  49. JoeBucco says:

Prediction: We win the game on a Robinzon Diaz HR in the 9th, once and for all putting the finishing touches on that trade as a big, fat W.

  50. JMB says:

If the city of Bradenton doesnt hire the Drew-meister, DK should get him a PR gig @ the Trib!

    ; = }

  51. JoeBucco says:

Reds lose in North Bradenton. A Bucco win tonight puts us in 3rd place ahead of them.

  52. Naje says:

Great start to this inning… McKenry, do your job… relax and just make contact… or sacrifice him.

  53. pattonbb says:

Cliff Lee’s scoreless streak is up to 32 innings. Incredible.

  54. JMB says:

    too obvious!

  55. JoeBucco says:

Seriously? Ronny calls time to catch a sign that he missed from Leyva, who seems to leave the play on. Tthe Jays call a pitch out on the next pitch and gun Ronny on a SB attempt? You might want to change the call after bringing that much attention to the fact that something was on.

  56. Naje says:

what a freakin’ moron… just like ronny to do that… if that was a called steal, i take it back… but that was freakin’ stupid… NOT in the 8th inning of a 1 run game… NOT with a guy who will probably try bunting you to 2nd or 3rd…

NOT THE FIRST PITCH YOU BONEHEAD.

  57. Keith says:

    McKenry gets a hit!

  58. Curt says:

Arrived late to the party. Like seeing that Presley has a homer and 3 Rbi’s. How about another homer?!?

  59. Curt says:

    Screw you Joey Batts. Lol.

  60. MrB says:

Wow, I wonder if Cedeno is going to get another day off to re-focus?

Here comes a key moment of this game…can the Bucs survive the bottom of the 8th?

  61. Keith says:

Only good thing about this is it’s the 8th and the 9th coming up. We’re money in the 8th and the 9th.

  62. Curt says:

Almost time for the Hammer to shut the door. Let’s Go Bucs!

  63. JoeBucco says:

Cliff Lee with 3 straight complete game shutouts.

Maybe we shoulda taken him in that Jason Bay trade after all. Might have worked out a little better than LaRoche, Hansen, Moss and Morris.

  64. JoeBucco says:

    STOP

  65. JoeBucco says:

    Hammer time.

  66. Bizrow says:

Wow, is it coincidence, we stop the PBP and the place blossoms?

Two down in the 9th, one on, lets break the streak

    JoeBucco, exactly

  67. Bizrow says:

    Nice post Drew

  68. JMB says:

    WooHOO

  69. pittmd says:

We had em all the way !

  70. JoeBucco says:

    Nooooooooooooooooo doubt.

  71. JMB says:

I kinda wanted to see Joey Bats vs. Hanny in a Clash of Titans, but I’ll take the WIN!

  72. Bizrow says:

And the streak is over, cool beans

  73. pattonbb says:

    “Hey Hanrahan…!!!”

  74. Keith says:

Well, that was a nice win. Again, the big boys will be talking about Pittsburgh tomorrow. Presley’s jack, Hanny closing again. Nice win.

  75. pipecock says:

Nice game, it’d be sweet to hammer on these guys due to their horrible D. It’s fun to see our D being an asset and taking advantage of other teams’ lack of it! The offense in general really seems to be picking up, including the longball. Count me as one of the people who is willing to see what this team can do when the injured players come back if the price on a rental bat is crazy high! I feel like NH is not into spending his chips yet, which is how I believe it should be. For those who have talked trash on our minor league depth, it’s pretty interesting how cats like D’Arnaud, Pressley, and a plethora or relievers have stepped right in. Plus we still have Hague down there who could also have an impact! It certainly seems that for all the hand-wringing over MLB-readiness in AAA has been wildly overblown. And of course all the true big time prospects are still lower in the organization!

I do hope this place picks up. As it is, I’ve been spending more time at Bucs Dugout as opposed to the old place. It’s not bad there, but I miss the DK touch for sure.

  76. pipecock says:

Also, I don’t see the technical problems here that might be holding it back. Aside from the difficulty in finding the page (which was alleviated by a simple bookmark), the simple list of comments doesn’t irk me nearly as much as the crazy nonsense that always seemed to go down at the old spot, especially the lack of comments on the mobile site since I only really use my phone for the net these days. I’m never a heavy commenter, though I’ve been reading since the start of the PBC blog years and years ago! I remember freaking out during the summer Olympics in 08 not being able to get the blog on my phone from the beach house we were at for 2 weeks!

  77. Reading says:

I’m hoping that the Hammer is in the untouchable category this year for the trade deadline. Do not want to go back to the days of the scrambling 9th innings.

  78. Playoff by 2012 says:

I find it amazing that the Pirates will enter July with no worse than a 40 – 40 record. AMAZING!!
