  1. JAL says:

Hope this lineup can put up som runs and that McDonald pitches a good game. Cards 3-4-5 hitters scary against a pitcher who gives up a lot of home runs.

  2. Naje says:

Hurdle’s quote below about Alvarez says a lot. Don’t care how hard he works… seems like he does a lot of stuff in a vacuum and has no idea why he’s not as good as he thinks or wants to be. This quote sounds like a thorough indictment of the difference between what his coach thinks and what Alvarez thinks.

“Every player has to take ownership of his own career and decide what’s best, and what’s best is not always what’s the most comfortable,” Hurdle said. “(Alvarez) needs to get the games and the at-bats in to play the game. All of it — field, defense, run the bases, hit, the routine. He did miss six weeks of baseball.”

  4. Keith says:

Check out the batting averages for this Pirates lineup. While there’s nothing staggering, Jones’ .248 is the lowest of the group. About time.

  5. Pattonbb says:

I guess my question about Alvarez is; is he doing something differently this year compared to last? I mean, is this coaching staff trying to get him to do something with his approach that last year’s staff didn’t? I can’t believe he has regressed this much. Even as he struggled last year, when he did make contact, he put a charge in the ball.

  6. CDBrewer says:

Maybe Alvarez for Logan Morrison – our head case for theirs…lol…no soup.

That quote is the first thing that actually gave me some real fear about Alvarez not developing. I’ve always felt he needs time to know either way. That quote scares me.

  7. CDBrewer says:

This is a VERY good start…
Might be a time for Cutch to steal a bag

  8. JMB says:

    I like this line-up!

  9. CDBrewer says:

Doumit would have been a great 4 this year behind those 3 and followed by Walker.
Oh well, still been a good year.

  10. Pattonbb says:

  11. Steve Smith says:

Molinas HR was the second hit in a row that was actually on the inner corner of the plate, but since everone is standing in the middle of the batter’s box, they actually hit it on the sweet spot. They really need to try and pitch these guys outside and maybe down. Same as they should have done last night.

  12. Steve Smith says:

Balls always seem to stay in the air longer when we hit the ball. That would have been nice to have Jones’ hit fall in.

  13. JAL says:

Pitartes do this too often, score early then stop hitting.

  14. JAL says:

back in front on a Tabata double, now can JMac keep the ball in the park?

  15. Steve Smith says:

He’s had control issues to the last couple batters and cedeno swings at the very first pitch. I know you want to be aggressive, but at least take one to see if he has any control.

  16. JAL says:

Agree, always take a pitch after a walk unless it belt high down the middle

  17. Steve Smith says:

    Another night, another baserunning gaff.

  18. Steve Smith says:

Again refusing to use the closer when he should be used bites us in the a$$ again! Game over at this point.

  19. Bunch of fair weather fans... says:

Yup, use the closer in every situation every night. That’s the answer. LMAO

  20. Bunch of fair weather fans... says:

Berkman pulled a knee high, 95 mph fastball on the outer half for a HR. He earned that one.

  21. TS says:

Veras sucks. Better not bring that dude back next year. Unreal.

  22. TS says:

Another one that was the Pirates game. It’s exhausting.

  23. Eric Bowser says:

Another game in which the bullpen can’t hold the lead and the offense falls asleep after a few runs early in the game.

Did not like some of the at-bats I saw from this team after the 4th inning.

  24. CDBrewer says:

    Hey Steve,

Can’t say I agree with using Hanny every night. We have said that every night.
If Veras and Resop can’t get through the 8th…we need to lose some games.

It isn’t that I disagree in principal given that 10 game skid, just EVERY night somebody says “use Hanny”.

  25. TS says:

Eric, the Pirates have a long long long way to go. You can’t have scrubs like Josh Harrison starting at 3B. Period. His presence is a microcosm of why this team isn’t a winning team. And add Veras.

  26. TS says:

I think we’re going to see quite a few players from this roster jettisoned come the offseason. Starting with Cedeno, thankfully.

  27. Justin says:

i think it should be noted that the 2 run homer put Veras’s ERA from under 3 to over 3. he’s been pretty dang good. very underrated player, IMO.

  28. Bunch of fair weather fans... says:

    Absolutely correct, Justin.

  29. yinzguys says:

Berkman’s home run came on a well-placed pitch. Nothing much you can do there. It is easy to forget when you follow the Pirates, but there are hitters out there that can homer on things other than a hanging slider, which makes them great. Wish we could afford one.

  30. Pattonbb says:

Veras is too hot or cold. When he’s on, he’s pretty tough. Unfortunately, Berkman just hit a good pitch. Great hitters will do that. Don’t throw Veras away just yet. When we trade Hanny next year, he might be the closer if Meek never regains his form.

That last comment isn’t meant as a “this team trades everyone away” kind of statement. Not at all. But I can’t see the Pirates giving Hanrahan insane money. They’ve proven the last couple years that they can build bullpens rather cheaply. It’s one thing they’re actually pretty good at.

Now if the FO could just find a 1b and ss.

  31. pghboyinca says:

Don’t be surprised if by year end we don’t pick 6-8 in the first round of the draft next year. As hard as it is to believe we amy lose 88-90 games.
