Pittsburgh sports talk with the Trib columnist

Wakeup Call: Seriously …

September 5th, 2011

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Some sporting thoughts before sunrise …

>> I don’t have an issue with the athletic directors’ handling of the West Virginia-Marshall mess last night. Not sure what else could have been done.

Rules are rules, and the rule is that any lightning strike within 6 miles brings a 30-minute delay. Well, those kept coming, even as the National Weather Service kept saying everything was about to be OK. It looked time and time again, like everything would be OK to play.

Left my house at noon and returning at midnight, so I’m kind of all out of stuff to say for the day, if I could take a mulligan from you this morning.

>> Oh, this is my Monday column about West Virginia’s fine quarterback, Geno Smith, and how he could make the difference over Pitt.

>> And this is my news story about the ridiculous day.

Happy Labor Day to all, in the home of what remains the United States’ largest Labor Day parade.
