Wakeup Call: Monday vacation thread

I’m on vacation until next Monday, but I have this post here for Joe to place his links and for any commenting on stuff today. I’ll put one of these up all week.

  1. Luiz Mello says:

Dropping a quick note just to thank the Baltimore Ravens for my Sunday’s LOL moment.

And also to ask whether the Harbaughs will be trading advice on how to best watch the Superbowl on TV.

  2. Jonathan says:

O-for-Harbaugh was magnificent to watch today.

Vote on the Penguins’ unsung hero.

  8. Jandy says:

Harrison a fowl hunter? Who’da think it? Wonder if Goodell will find a way to fine him for that???

I voted for the unsung hero on the Pens, and it was a tough choice.

Thanks JAL for the links, it will help calm our “twitches” since Dejan is enjoying himself.

  9. Jandy says:

    One more thing:

    RIP Joe Paterno. :(

  10. Bizrow says:

So, I’mm thinking we will be pulling for the NYGiants in the Superbowl?

Still not a happy choice, but it could have been MUCH worse

  11. radio wave says:

As a life long Pats fan, I’m breathing a sigh of relief after yesterday’s lucky, ugly win.
May I respectfully suggest folks go to, the website of the Boston Globe, to read Bob Ryans commentary on Joe Paterno.

    DK, have a great vacation.

  12. Milo Hamilton says:

RIP Joe Paterno. It shouldn’t have ended this way.

  13. Jandy says:

Biz, Eli pulls this one off, he’ll make older brother look really, really bad ;)

  14. JMB says:

Yup, Now it’s time to cheer for the G-men.

Both games could have gone either way, but DK was 0-2, and I was 2-0.

    The Harbaugh sweep was enjoyable.

  15. JohninOshkosh says:

Fascinating Bloomberg article (#12), JAL. Nice to know that Bud is unable to impose his desires on the judicial system.

  16. JAL says:

Who knew there were limits to Bud’s power :)

  17. January 23

26 days until Pirate Spring Training

    We don’t need no stinking power hitting, good fielding 1st baseman . . . . .

  18. LuckyNKentucky says:

Great post, Groat. The Treasure of Sierra Pittsburgh, a power-hitting 1B.

  19. Nate says:

To echo something I read on BehindTheSteeCurtain, that was the least inspiring AFC championship game I have seen in years. The Patriots have only one victory against a team with a regular season record better than .500 – the Ravens (and you could make the argument that the Ravens blew it more than the Patriots won it). New England lost the other two games they played (Steelers, Giants).

What a shame to see Pittsburgh go down in Denver. What a shame for all the injuries they had to deal with. At the their best, they were the best team in the conference.

  20. pgherinfl says:

Best thing happened when the Harbaughs lost. Now we don’t have to listen to how great they are. I also think this rematch of the Super Bowl will go the same way. Go Giants, no way to Patriots!!!

  21. NMR says:

Looks like DK’s prognosticating has followed him into the New Year…:)

The Pirates WILL hit this year. I mean it!

  22. CWalton_67 says:

Rumor floating around twitter is that Pens are interested in bringing back Hal Gill. Assuming that Lovejoy will be gone, who sits? Engo? Not sure Gill is better than Engelland at this point.

    Thoughts anyone?

  23. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

All do respect, I don’t care what Bob Ryan has to say…Never liked that guy.

RIP JoePa…sad day, hard to believe even still. He was a legend and the greatest coach to ever coach at any level. He was Penn State….too bad it couldn’t have been Sandusky.

  24. Jandy says:

@ CWalton ~ I can’t imagine why the Pens would want to bring Gill back. With our defensive depth, who needs him? I’d keep Engo for sure!

@ Ryan, sometimes there’s just no justice. :(

  25. Milo Hamilton says:

The NFL is sending James Harrison to the Pro Bowl just so they have one more chance to fine him.

  26. Leefoo says:

    Milo………# 27…….LOL

  27. JAL says:

Maybe they hope Harrison will do something that can suspend him for the first 4 games next season.

  28. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Ya know, this blog really needs to add like buttons…….

  29. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Since football season is essentially over and I’m not a huge hockey fan. Does anybody want to talk Pirates baseball, or what they call baseball? I have a few questions that I’d like to get some takes on:

    1. Who will be traded first?

    2. Is Garrett Jones really a bad alternative at 1B?

    3. Whats the over/under on Pedro’s batting average and home run totals?

    4. Will Bedard stay healthy?

    5. Where should AMac bat? (my idea and it has been for a long time is #3)

    6. Again Pedro; How long until Casey Maghee (mcgee) takes over at 3B?

    7. Who’s the #1 Starting pitcher?

    8. Does Joel Hanrahan continue his dominance as closer?

    9. Who likes this speedy outfield? ( I’m torn on Presley)

    10. Who will be the surprise of the season??

Just thought this would be fun..I’m starting to get excited for baseball, even though we wont break .500 again….but, who knows.

  30. Bill says:

1 – Whoever is playing best/costs the most
    2 – Yes
    3 – .227 / 12
4 – only if he is traded
5 – 8th. It will keep his cost down longer, the better to trade him for unequal value
6 – 8/29/12 unless Pedro pulls a hammy going to dunking donuts earlier in the year
    7 – Cole?
8 – Yes, once he is traded
    9 – Not me
10 – AMac – for his extended struggles in the #8 slot

  31. Bill says:

You should really start following hockey…

  32. JAL says:

    Some tough ones there

1-Depends on how season is going but Bedard is set up to be a trade if healthy–teams always looking for a starter as the pennant race intensifies.

2-Not bad, just average to a bit below average, still, can’t be worse than Overbay was.

    3–No clue

    6-He won’t

8-Yes, also makes him a tread possibility

9-OF lacks power, fortunately Cutch has good power but would like more power from left and/or right

10-Out on limb, Nate will get his mojo back.

  33. Kevin says:

And I agree with Bill, you should start following hockey!!

    1. Hanrahan
    2. Not if he finds power…soon
    3. .240/15
    4. Yes
    5. Agree w/ AMac in the 3d spot
    6. Maghee will take over at 1B first
    7. Karstens
    8. Yes…see #1 above as proof
    9. Love the OF which makes each of them trade bait
    10. I’ll say Bedard cause it could go either way

  34. MadTurk says:

Go Go Giants!!! Would have been a real hard choice if it was SF and NE.

    R.I.P. JoePa

  35. Bill, after reading your answers to Ryan’s Pirate questions:

    You should start following hockey!

  36. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Out here on the west coast, it makes a little more difficult for me to follow hockey. I have the Sharks around, but they are really boring to watch, but I try.

thanks for playing with the answers.

  37. Arriba Wilver says:

    How’ve you been?

  38. Eric Bowser says:

In honor’s of DK’s separation anxiety and let’s be honest, he’s probably sitting on his couch shaking in withdrawal that he can’t text, twitter, email, or surf the web. Poor guy.

So with that, I present a few thoughts…

    1) Joe Paterno spent years doing the right thing and after doing the right thing for 89% of his life helping others, I can’t let a really big mistake erase all that good. It is hard to say this knowing how much I detest the man for what he didn’t do. He could have done more and I think that combined with losing life’s work, he passed away with a broken heart. There will never be another Joe Paterno in sports – never and this comes from a PITT fan.

    2) Washington Capital fans on twitter have hit epic meltdown mode with their whining and complaining about Alexander Ovechkin’s three-game suspension. He deserved the three-game suspension, without a doubt but fans want to somehow blame this on Pittsburgh or compare his on Zybnek Michalek to that of Michalek’s own on Matt Hendricks, one that didn’t get a fine or suspension. Wake up Washington, the man plays with a wreck-less attitude and it isn’t the first nor will it be the last hit in which Ovechkin leaves his feet.

    3) Now, how the NHL can suspend Ovechkin and others but not at least fine Michalek is just astounding. Michalek should have received a two-game suspension for his hit on Hendricks.

    4) Tim Thomas, what a mistake to not go to the White House because of your political beliefs because all it did was deflect well-deserved attention of the Bruins’ accomplishments to win the Cup towards his politics. Never mix sports with politics, it won’t end well for anyone.

    5) PITT lost again over the weekend, I don’t think Dixon is going to be around long once the university plays in the ACC, if he can’t recruit top end players and get them to stick around and be successful. Dante Taylor and Khem Birch are not exactly giving many fans warm and fuzzy feelings on his ability to work with those kids. Steven Adams is likely a one and done, if he honors his commitment to PITT.

    6) Presley, Tabata, McCutchen, Walker, McGehee, Alvarez, Barajas, and Barmes isn’t exactly an upgrade over what we had to end the season in 2011. The Pirates are wasting the cheap controllable years of their nucleus but that’s nothing new in Pittsburgh. Can’t wait for another 90 loss season.

    7) Steelers fired offensive coordinator Bruce Arians because he didn’t run enough? Maybe Arians would have run more if he had an offensive line capable of blocking, so if the fans want to rip the man, I can accept it because I was never a big fan but let’s start to turn our attention to Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert. Those two need to get better lineman and by that I don’t mean moving Gilbert to left tackle and returning Willie Colon to right tackle. Why not move Ramon Foster to left guard, Willie Colon to right guard, and leave Gilbert at right tackle and Maurkice Pouncey at center. This leaves left tackle to address in the draft or free agency, time to commit for a good linemen to protect your $100 million QB.

  39. scapper says:

Bowser…well said and so true about mixing sports and politics. I didn’t like they a few commenters tried to inject some politics into this blog a week or so ago. Can’t remember the sports topic, but some comments started referencing Clinton-Lewinsky and other political topics.

Not against paying attention to politics and current events….let’s just keep them separate unless there is a legitimate connection.

  40. Jandy says:

    A bit late…was busy last evening…
@Eric ~ I disagree on Michalek deserving suspension. I think a $2500 token fine like PK Subban received this week (even tho the offense was different) would have been plenty.
