Title song Downtown, Petula Clark, 1965. First of a string of hits by her. She is now 79 and about to open for two weeks at Feinstein’s in New York City.
Surprisingly, AO got 3 games. More surprising, Z-man got nothing, not even a fine. I expected a fine, similar to PK Subban getting fined for his continued shenanigans. That’s another one that needs a lengthy suspension.
Petula Clark, 79 and still performing live??? Amazing!
Thanks for the links JAL =)
I’m a huge Sinatra fan. But there was a time in the 60′s when Frank tried a little too hard to be hip. I thought they should have taken all those songs and put them together in an album entitled – Frank, What Were You Thinking ? Here’s a classic instance. Downtown.
@Jandy–I figured Ovi would get suspended, but I don’t understand how he got the same number of games suspension as Engelland, who was not a repeat offender. I expected more from Shanahan. If the NHL was serious about ending head shots, he would have gotten ten games. And Michalek should have been suspended for a game. His hit was blatant, and dangerous.

Pirate starting pitching——”What, me worry?!” quoth Alfred . . . . .
CWalton, I agree in one respect that Michalek should have gotten something.. But I was leaning towards a fine, as that is all that PK Subban got for slew footing Kunitz. There’s a another player (I use the term loosely) that needs severe discipline. Michalek’s hit wasn’t extreme, though he did hit the head, but I don’t think it merited suspension.
Agree with you 100% tho, that Ovie should have gotten at least 10 games. This is his third suspension. Had that been Cooke, well, he’d have been banned from the league. Nuff said.
Happy to see “Moneyball” get some Oscar nominations this morning. Always has amazed me that in the incredibly rich history of American cinema there have only been a handful of great baseball movies. Especially, given how intertwined baseball is in the American DNA.
Similarly amazed that there has never been a great biopic about Clemente. His story has the great drama of triumph, intolerance, achievement and loss. Some great books about his life-but no films.
Thank God for Ray Searage. I’m sure Karstens and Morton do, based on their success and newly-padded wallets. Searage has the ability to make a silk purse out of the proverbial sow’s ear and Kerigan (Dave, whatever Kendall called him) had the opposite effect.
E. Newman
Ovie has pulled out of the all-star game, blaming the suspension. Hopefully the NHL will go one better and put James Neal in his place.
Neal belonged there first anyway, but I agree tmp…
#8 from JAL’s list above a very interesting take on the Pirates’ farm.
Another SBNation link from that page gives even a better evaluation of Neal Huntington and his tenure here: fair but critical. Quick Analysis: will Bucs in fact EVER arrive?!?
It ticks me off a little that my Spring, 2010 assessment—the Bucs won’t be at .500 until 2013 at best——appears to be accurate. I would have much rather been wrong!!
@ tmo and Kevin, heck, that’s GREAT news. With Toews likely out, looks like Nealer may get in there yet
So, Ovie is being a spoiled child. Someone should make him stand at the chalkboard and write “I will not leave my skates to make illegal hits to the head ever again” 100 times
@Jandy – as long as Shanahan provides the video commentary as to why he is receiving the punishment…
Kevin ~ How do you make a video of a thick skull like Ovie’s that nothing sinks into?
Prince Fielder signs with Detroit.
Remember when free agents wouldn’t go there ?
Milo ~ wow. Detroit’s sports teams are improving. Wings are good, have been for years. Lions did well this past season. Now the Tigers get Fielder. Who’da thunk it?
Today the Pirates did nothing .
I guess their offer to Prince just wasn’t….oh, wait. Nevermind.
Well, the best management team in sports would tell you the difference between the Pirates and Tigers is attendance. PNC averaged 24k fans, Comerica had 36k.
Fielder signs with the Tigers!
Detroit has erased the last possible excuse for the Pirates not signing a superstar (too small of a market to afford one).
Today, this fan’s ‘internal value’ of the Pirates’ current management team has evaporated to next to nothing…
