Pittsburgh sports talk with the Trib columnist

Final: Pirates 7, Yankees 4

Looking ahead to first pitch …

Game: Pirates (1-2) vs. New York Yankees, Grapefruit League

Time: 1:05 p.m.

Site: McKechnie Field, Bradenton, Fla.

Here is the live box score. Rob Biertempfel is on the scene.

  1. Black n Gold (not yellow) says:

Justin Wilson looked AWESOME yesterday. 95 from the left side with that delivery is definitely promising. Wouldn’t mind seeing him force the Pirates hand this season.

  2. Black n Gold (not yellow) says:

Even if it is as a bullpen piece.

  3. JAL says:

Wilson has an arm, control has been holding him back.

  4. Milo Hamilton says:

I heard an interview with Ray Searage last week. He said Wilson had made an adjustment with his delivery & he was really excited to see him in games. He also mentioned Juan Cruz who is off to a good start this spring.

  5. JAL says:

Cruz has a shot at making the club. They still have hope for Wilson to be a starter so most likely will try him in the Indy rotation.

  6. LuckyNKentucky says:

What about Leroux? You mentioned him in your series and of course, he’s out of options. Does he have to have a great spring?

  7. JAL says:

Leroux has a good chance to make the team, most likely at expense of D. McCutchen

  8. JAL says:

Some good pitching against the Yanks today. Leroux had 1-2-3 inning with a K

  9. LuckyNKentucky says:

You did say that. Shame. McCutchen had some good stretches last season and he’s a good kid.

  10. Milo Hamilton says:

Leroux also at the expense of Resop ?

  11. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Is DMac out of options as well?

  12. JAL says:

No, DMac has two options left

  13. JAL says:

Possible but not likely, Pirates love power arms.

  14. Milo Hamilton says:

Leroux can be nasty against righthanded hitters.

  15. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

And he is NOT a power arm, Leroux is more of one.

    Who doesn’t love power arms??

  16. JAL says:

    Final Pirates 7 Yankees 4

Yankees scored two unearned runs off McCutchen in 9th.

  17. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    opps, he’s fired now…..

  18. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    Starling Marte-Called up this summer?

  19. Nate says:

Ryan – once he shows he can catch a fly ball. :)

  20. aglebagel says:

No Pitt game thread, Dejan? Your punishment is this post-game Gibbs quote: “Anything is possible with God on our side.”

DK: Totally my fault. Got all wrapped up in this Sid stuff. It will be there tomorrow. Promise.

  21. JAL says:

Marte has no AAA experience so depends on how he does there and what needs the Pirates have mid-season.

  22. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I really don’t see him being called up unless its in September. I think LF is Presley’s to lose and then if he does, they didn’t pay Nate a million bucks to sit around. I look for him to be the the LFer in 2013.

Interesting if AP does well though. I don’t see him to be a chip to offer in a trade to grab anybody of any importance.

  23. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Can somewhere tell me where Pedro has been during this young spring training season?

  24. JAL says:

    Pedro played last night–0-3 with 2 K

  25. PigLegs Robinson says:

Tabata is the one who hasn’t produced much. Why does everyone instantly think ‘Presley’ when looking for a spot in the outfield?

If Tabata doesn’t start hitting and with more power, at least with Al Oliver-like line drive/extra base hit authority rather than the Miguel Dilone-like punch & Judy hitting he showed last year, he will be lucky if Nate McLouth doesn’t take his starting job. Mark my words.
