Game: Pirates (3-7) vs. Baltimore Orioles, Grapefruit League

Time: 1:05 p.m.

Site: Ed Smith Stadium, Sarasota, Fla.

Radio: 93.7 The Fan

Here is the live box score. I’ll toss up occasional stuff on my Twitter account, too.

And here is the Pirates’ lineup …

  1. Alex Presley, LF
  2. Jose Tabata, RF
  3. Andrew McCutchen, CF
  4. Neil Walker, 2B
  5. Garrett Jones, 1B
  6. Pedro Alvarez, 3B
  7. Clint Barmes, SS
  8. Michael McKenry, C
  9. James McDonald, RHP

One quick pic from batting practice this morning in Bradenton …

That’s Walker in the cage.

UPDATE 10:13 a.m.: Catcher Rod Barajas and wife Stacie had their seventh child, daughter Starlette, last night in San Diego. Barajas is expected to rejoin the Pirates tomorrow.

12:22 p.m.: All kinds of talk this morning that the Pirates are trying to add pitching. Don’t ask names. Haven’t heard one. But it sounds imminent.

3:41: Brief chat with Joel Hanrahan just now, after another dominant outing …

He hasn’t allowed a hit yet, and he’s struck out three in six innings.

  1. John Lease says:

Dejan, liked your column this morning, evidently you are getting a different feel from spring trainings in the past. Are you going to get a chance to catch up with John Russell when the O’s are in? I’m praying to the baseball gods for an infield fly situation to come up in today’s game so you can ask about it.

  2. Bizrow says:

Is JR still the third base coach for the O’s? I seem to remember him “being moved from that position” during at least part of last season

  3. Starting lineup and batting order for Opening Day except for catcher.

  4. JohninOshkosh says:

Wasn’t JR moved to the bench coach position because of a bum leg or back? Probably hurt them in Pittsburgh removing his starting pitcher from the ninth inning of the last game of the season or from keeping his team from charging from the dugout at Dodger Stadium in retaliation.

  5. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

    It’s gotta be bullpen names….

Groat- I thought the same thing. I would put Barajas behind Pedro though.

  6. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Don’t forget JR has both hips replaced, it can’t be a comfortable feeling out on 3B for a whole season for him….

  7. Greg G. says:

7 kids…does RB know what causes that?

  8. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

He’s probably Catholic and doesn’t believe in……..ah nevermind, this is a sports blog

  9. Milo Hamilton says:

I think they are in desperate need of an eight inning bullpen guy. I don’t think you can rely on Meek at this point. And lefty bullpen help would also be welcome.

  10. Jandy says:

ROFL! (7 kids and Catholic reference)

  11. CWalton_67 says:

Looking for opinions on how much Alex Presley will contribute this season, including DK if he has a minute. I think the kid had a lot to do with making the offense go after his call up last season. And I think he’s going to have a big year this year too, if he can stay healthy. How about the rest of you?

  12. Milo Hamilton says:

If spring training convinces them they could get about 3 months out of McLouth, Presley could be trade bait.

DK: Presley needs to show more on-base skills. He might be forced into leadoff primarily to emphasize this point to him. We’ll see.

  13. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Veteran lefty help Milo……they have 2 or 3 lefties, but from the report from yesterday, they aren’t very comfortable with any of them, including Meek.

    Who’s available though?

  14. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

@CWalton- He could set the tone for the offense. I like him in the leadoff spot.

  15. Nate says:

Oh DK, you are such a trouble maker. :)

  16. CWalton_67 says:

@Ryan–I agree. Seems though that most don’t think very highly of him.

@Milo–agree on that as well, especially with Marte getting close. Just seems to me that Presley is one of those guys that given a chance, could really surprise a few people.

  17. JAL says:

Good efficient day, 11 runs on 14 hits–a 3 run inning and two 4 run innings.

  18. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

I don’t see Presley as the future on the team. I do see, and I’ve said this before, that he becomes the 4th OFer next year, with Marte taking over in LF.

  19. JohninOshkosh says:

I think the offense wanted to show off for Dejan. Nice to know they are capable of putting up some big innings.

  20. LuckyNKentucky says:

DK mentioned adding pitching. Presley for Lannan? At 5 mil., he’s not a bad risk. (It’s not my money).

  21. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Good call Lucky- Nats are looking for a full-time CFer.

Who gets bumped in the rotation though? That’s why I think bullpen help.

  22. Bizrow says:

Nooo, not Presley, I don’t think the Nats will get that much, maybe Gorkys?

MLB Trade Rumors says nutting moving with him right now per Rizzo, butcha never know

  23. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

@Biz- I checked that website earlier to and saw nothing. I dont see Gorkys getting him either, unless Nats are just looking to move some payroll.

  24. LuckyNKentucky says:

Gorkys would be a nice move. Barring injury or another trade, he’s sufficiently blocked for a few years.

  25. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

Either one of them would be a good move, Gorkys probably has more upside.

  26. LuckyNKentucky says:

True, especially if he hits. Presley will probably hit.

  27. Milo Hamilton says:

    Gorkys has no upside.

  28. Ryan(Nor-Cal Stlrfanrc) says:

So they pick up Lannon, who’s out? I dont see this being the move.

  29. LuckyNKentucky says:

You can never have enough arms, example last season.

  30. Eric Bowser says:

Has Mike Gonzalez signed with anyone yet? I think Pirates need a veteran LH pitcher in the bullpen, I’m not sure they are real comfortable with Watson, Moskos, Wilson, etc.

  31. PigLegs Robinson says:

I’d love to get completely surprised and have this imminent new pitching be perhaps maybe a frontline starter like Gavin Floyd, Jair Jurrjens or Jeff Niemann. I know I’m way out in fantasy land with that, but it’s nice to dream. The reality will probably be more like some journeyman reliever on the brink of retirement or a quad-a minor leaguer out of options.
